Modern Vintage Gamer (Dimitris Giannakis | archive) is a developer with a YouTube channel where he talks about game development, emulation, and such things. His biggest claim to fame might be his port of SNES9X to the original Xbox around 20 years ago. He also shills some shady products from time to time.

"Xbox Emulators running on Retail Mode Is BACK"
1689193764182.png

Okay so, if you aren't an Xbox guy, let me catch you up to speed: Xbox One and Series X|S consoles can be put into developer mode for a fee of $19, which lets you export UWP software from source onto your Xbox for playtesting and distribution. Of course, this means you can run whatever source code you can get to work, which meshes beautifully with how emulators tend to be open source. This includes Retroarch, Dolphin, and even Xenia. The downside to developer's mode is that you aren't allowed to launch retail games while in it, and of course, the small paywall. You can switch back and forth between retail and developer mode at any time, though it's a little bit of a hassle. This method never went away.

Emulators running in retail mode have occurred in a few different ways: they're often gated off behind discords, where you send someone the email address associated with your Xbox account and get manually whitelisted, though a lot of hidden emulators have shown up in the UWP store disguised as a completely different app, or even just with muddled, unsearchable text (i.e. "Rê†rðår¢h"). Microsoft cracked down on these earlier in the year.

Xbox emulators running on retail mode are absolutely not back, or at least in the form that anyone would guess. This is a video shilling something called "UWeaPonStore" (archive), a Patreon which offers retail mode Xbox emulators for $2 a month. According to a commenter (seen below), their software was pulled 3 hours after MVG published his video.

Dimitris here is in defense mode on his own stickied post, as commenters are calling him out:

He does not condemn the paywall in the video at all. At 6:18, he mentions he has no affiliation with this group. According to the archive of the Patreon some gigachad out there made on the day the video was uploaded, they were pulling CAD$1,166 a month. (CAD$1,166 = USD$884.32). They have since hidden that figure.

UPDATE (as of January 2nd, 2024): At some point, MVG updated this video and unlisted it, with a warning that Microsoft is handing out 15-day suspensions for anyone using retail mode emulators.

November 2021:
This isn't the first time he's been shady. In November 2021, he put up a video advertising an emulator machine as a Nintendo 64 clone console, and spilled his spaghetti in the comments. I made an extensive post about it you can read here:

Great, I have a new group of people to get MATI at for existing. At least with OnlyFans whores you get a product you can save on your hardware until the end of time, but these fucking niggers are making people rent their emulator?

Making people rent other people's emulators, more like. What you're getting for your $2 a month is a notification of what apps to download, and the ability to be whitelisted, in order to install emulators (open source ones, compiled and posted by whomever runs UWeaPonStore). In the past, these are generally run by people on Discord groups who'll whitelist anyone who shows up and asks nicely, but these jackasses are making money on it. Hand over fist, at that.

When I was writing the OP, this had just been posted:

So, you find that photo album app in the Microsoft Store, install it, run it, and then input the Konami code in order to download emulators. Funny thing is, an hour later, they posted this:

Another hour passes, and we get:

So we'll see what comes of this, lol. For them to hit over a thousand bucks (Canadian) before MVG did a video, they must have had some kind of influence somewhere. That's a nice paycheck for basically just selling other people's work illegally, on a platform where it violates the TOS.

Fuck, I was hoping that some of my childhood games from console would be on PC, he's also working on the clocktower LR.
I don't actually give a shit about clocktower snes, but I loved clocktower for Playstation. (It was so jank)

Him being untrustworthy like New Frontier skunk makes me sad.

When I used to pirate games, I was super paranoid about it, I only installed them on a second hard drive that didn't have internet access. I recently put some of those DVD's in my current PC and my AV lit up like a fucking christmas tree. (I was going to put them all on a microsd and toss the aging DVD-r's)

I really don't get "renting" an emulator, but I'd never touch discord in the first place.

I really enjoyed MVG's videos and it makes me sad that he's a trojan horse turd.

>spends the first 13 minutes kissing Starfield's ass
>talks about the graphics being incredible, despite obviously not being any better than Fallout 4, an eight-year-old game
>mentions Bethesda games are known for having good stories (lolwat)
>finally gets around to talking about its poor PC performance, completely softballs it
>humblebrags about having an RTX 4080, a $1200 GPU

13:28: "But in my experience, performance on Starfield with my Intel i9 processor, and my Nvidia 4080, which, look it's not it's a top of the- top of the range gaming PC but it's definitely something I would say is above average"

>doesn't mention the requirement for an SSD install, something I've personally never seen in a PC game before

Bit of a necro, but he's going on about how fat he's gotten and he looked pretty rough. He's done this complaining about his personal life for some reason a few times, but this one is pretty dark. Doing that is never a good look on Youtube.

I like most of his stuff, but he seems off his game for awhile. Seems depressed, maybe mentally ill, certainly anxiety ridden over his job, and it's sad. I like him pretty well usually. A lot of IT people in general seem to be in a bit of a panic mode lately.

Being 'that pirate emu guy on youtube' might not have been the best career move. Rough feedback.

Wouldn't be too surprised if he's a drunk or something either, has that dull chubby cheeked look.

I kinda respect the guy for some of what he does, he's done some really interesting videos in the past, but he seems like a real asshole a lot of the time, too.

I guess one could say in MVG’s case that a mistake was really made in trying to not overpower your own dev abilities. Either way, I hope he takes a good break and try to re-evaluate his life, since I too enjoy some of his videos.

Aged out married "IT" dude. Maybe was a hard drinker. New house... new stress. bad move? add in job insecurity. One chess move by the wife and that shit will kill at 50. Not in as bad as a situation as a 25 yo tech twink game dev many of which lost their jobs this year but the twink got 25 years on you to figure it out.

OG pirates not super happy with him which hurts when you have/had scene cred. You trade that in for Youtube tards that are just using your borderline depression to cope with their own depression and your vids as background noise.

He should post here will fix him right up.
