@unwieldy_object All good answers above, but I'll throw in my perspective as a European who has lived a good part of his life in the US.

As mentioned, your likelihood of encountering these people depends a lot on the local environment. Social class is important. On the bottom rung of society are the inner-city homeless. Homeless people are not usually fat, for a variety of reasons: drugs, the privations of the street, etc. The level of society directly above is where you'll find the majority of deathfats - poor, but they have somewhere to live and they have enough money to feed their addiction, which is food and sugary drinks. That's the best way to think about it, in my opinion - the super-obese are like drug addicts, but instead of fentanyl, they use junk food. I'll return to that point shortly.

This is also tied to geography. Here is a map showing level of obesity by state:

Screenshot 2023-12-14 043144.png

People in states such as Hawaii and Massachusetts, which are very well off, are skinnier on average. Image-obsessed California and D.C. also are less obese. The South and the Midwest are fatter, and West Virginia, Oklahoma and Louisiana are the three fattest states. This red/dark red part of the country contains many of its poorest areas.

So income plays a part, but I don't think that's the whole story. There's also a cultural aspect. I think if you grow up in a small town in West Virginia say (no offense to anyone from there), and you don't have much education or many prospects and your entire view of the world is limited to West Virginia, and since your childhood you've only had access to ultra-processed, highly-fattening food, and maybe there wasn't that much else in your childhood that you actually enjoyed that much, then perhaps fate is kind of nudging you down the path towards morbid obesity.

In the big cities, you do see some, but not as many. In the Bay Area and NYC, where I've spent the most time, you definitely do see really, really fat people now and then, but they're comparatively rare. Take from that what you will.

The real key though is market forces. Capitalism advances more rapidly and in more extreme ways in the US than in any other part of the world, and this is where I want to bring up drugs again, because I think there's actually a lot of similarities here with widespread addiction to opioids. Pharmaceutical companies started tinkering with chemicals to create substances that mimic the effects of opium on the human body, and then sold these as painkillers and made a huge profit. Ultra-processed food is designed also to be addictive, finding the perfect balance of sugar, fat, carbs and all the other foodstuffs humans naturally crave, and mass-producing them so they can be sold as cheaply as possible.

Deathfat sightings used to be pretty common in my neck of the woods back in the 2000s but the ubiquity of home delivery services since the 2010s has whittled sightings down quite a bit.

Tessy, leaving one Little Debbies cake in the box is not restricting. Dipshit.

At least she's realizing that she's recognized as a liar, even though she bitter as fuck about it. And she just got an 'eating disorder' (note it's NOT 'restrictive eating disorder' or 'anorexia awareness' or anything - just a generic 'eating disorder awareness') award, hums and says that those who say she's not anorexic but has EDNOS are wrong... except they're not, because she has EDNOS. Because she shoves food into her face and drinks all of her calories without realizing what she's mindlessly doing. And she's vocal with her stupidity, which I guess is award-worthy - if you can tolerate looking like an utter fucking dumbass to the entire world while screeching about eating disorders, I guess a blue ribbon slapped on those ham-hock arms is a proper response from fellow brain-dead buttergolems.

She's totally on the money when it comes to LA people, they're absolutely like this.

What's interesting though is you can sense serious pain there. She's lonely and miserable and has no friends and no one to love her, and none of her LA dreams came true. Pretty sad.

Lard have mercy, groTESSque is big mad and i am here for it and loving it.

Keep going ,girl. Keep posting how bitter and irrelevant you truly are. Keep raging against those who point out the truth to you. Keep on posting how being fat is such a struggle and not glamorous and how people completely dismiss you.

Have lunch with you? Nobody except for a feeder wants to try to eat while across the table you revoltingly and gleefully cram endless amounts of food into your gaping maw.

It's not just LA from what I see but the current generation as a whole. But it is probably more prominent in LA where everyone is fake and cares more about appearances than anything.

The whole ghosting culture went from dating apps to every aspect of life. I blame the whole blameless culture. Noone should be expected to do anything and no one owes anyone else anything. It just enabled a bunch of people to be assholes.

I agree. But how many times has Tess done this to someone? We’ve seen her revolving door of BFFs, how many got the boot when they weren’t going to actually benefit her in any way? Now the shoe is on the other foot and Tess gets treated like any Z-lister that is looking to get ahead. Especially since her reputation undoubtedly proceeds her in the modeling world. They know about her lies, her burned bridges, and her cake johns and they ask why? Why invest their time into Tess Hoolliday?

When it comes to these things, there is an aspect of being mutually beneficial. What does Tess bring to the table in December 2023. She’s been given many second chances and they’ve finally run out. I think she’s desperate, wanting to do anything so she can keep living in the Los Angeles area. Options are running low for her, looks like Mississippi or some other low COL area is more and more in her future.

Yeah, and so is Tess. You can't tell me she hasn't brushed off people she regards as unimportant with, "Let's get coffee/do lunch sometime." That's how image- and status-obsessed Los Angelenos soft-reject people who aren't currently useful to them; it gives them the option to come back later, should circumstances change and that person does become useful.

Tess's decline is now in full swing; she has nothing worthwhile to offer anybody, but she's just famous enough that she might still have something to offer in the future, so they aren't slamming the door on her. Not yet.

Tess's issue isn't that this kind of low-key brush-off is an integral part of LA fame/status culture; it's that it's being done to her. She never had a problem with it until she started getting it all the time, and now that she is, it's suddenly this terrible, heartless thing.

Yeah, there's pain there, but I can't sympathize with her and don't find it sad.

If you're a woman, and your livelihood is in an image-based field where your youth and beauty are a prized commodity, time is not on your side. Really; it isn't, without exception, and every woman who goes into that field ought to know that. It has never been any different, and there are countless cautionary tales. Even if you're a legend, and age well, and still manage to get work in midlife, it's going to be a big comedown from your heyday.

I recall flipping through a copy of Elle Decor maybe 12-15 years ago, and seeing '80s supermodel Cindy Crawford in an ad for expensive custom countertops—an ad she never would have done in her prime. She still looked great, but that she was doing that ad at all was evidence of how far her career had fallen. And she's Cindy fucking Crawford. So what made Tess Holliday, token fatty, think that she was still going to have a thriving career at 40?

So if you want to keep pulling in money after your peak, you have to have a backup plan: marry a billionaire (or at least have a kid by one); start a fashion or lifestyle brand; make solid investments during your peak earning years; or develop more enduring skills (interviewing; TV hosting/reporting; acting) that let you stay in front of the camera and get paid well for it. Whatever it is, you need a long-term plan.

And Tess obviously is not a long-term planner. Nobody who treats her body like she does, and pisses off clients the way she has, and fails to develop skills that can mature with her, and tells blatant lies about herself (anorexia, LOL), and burns through so many relationships with so many kinds of people, is giving any serious thought to the future, and the consequences of their behavior.

Tess has been living wholly in the present, thinking that the future will be more of the same, if not better—and even though the last few years should have smacked some sense into her, they obviously haven't. Now it's everybody else's failing that they're giving her the brush-off, and not hiring her, and not interested in giving her any more opportunities (such as her previous podcast, or failed #EYBS clothing partnership).

That's exactly it. She chose a career that is based solely around fame and status. She 100% would have relished doing this to others but is mortified at the behaviour now that the shoe is on the other hoof.

Don't like the fake BS of LA and the modelling world? Get a real job, you fat fucking sow.

Just to stick up for Cindy Crawford a little, she "designs" furniture, so that's her non-looks thing. Maybe she really designs it, maybe she just uses her name, but she's been doing it for ages.
Tess couldn't even find someone who'd be willing to slap her name on something they manufacture. If she had any kind of reputation, she'd be pushing her own line of something or other by now, but unless she wants to put her own (ha) money into manufacturing and advertising, she'll just die fat and irrelevant.

She had that failed fashion capsule that got deeply discounted in just a couple weeks after release and then she had some really tacky looking shoes with Charlotte Stone. That’s it. She attempted to be a fashion designer but she failed because she has no eye for fashion, despite being a model for several years. The reason why is that her narcissism levels are so astronomical she refuses to learn anything. To her, the purpose of anything she does to further her own brand. Lots of egomaniacs in the fashion industry but many work their asses off so they can boost their ego. Tess’s contributions were garbage because she’s so lazy and narcissistic that she thought just showing up was going to be enough. This all ties back to her video where people aren’t interested in working with her. It would be different if she put in a modicum of effort into building and preserving relationships and connections or fashion design but nope, she did none of those and now blubbers how nobody will pick up the phone. This is karma in action for ten years of mismanagement.

I sense a change of scene coming. She might even be consiously laying the groundwork for a move on social media.

Yeah, and so is Tess. You can't tell me she hasn't brushed off people she regards as unimportant with, "Let's get coffee/do lunch sometime."
I agree and I wouldn't tell you that. Being a fake bitch in showbiz or fashion is a breeze while you're in the limelight. Once the tables turn and you're on the receiving end however, it's not much fun. She must be remembering what it was like being in her hometown around humbler, more ingenuous people and in her more self-aware moments, she realizes she misses it.

Yeah, there's pain there, but I can't sympathize with her and don't find it sad.
Well, I meant 'sad' in a pitying rather than a sympathetic way.

Yes, and she's sounding like a bad drag queen with that voice while uttering the following:

* Besties
* Fahht Behtch
* They don' meen it
*Maraiah Carey's Internet
* BeeeeYOUNCE's iNtErNeT

Pot, meet oversized squat kettle.

What the fuck is she even talking about here? I literally don't understand. What does anything she's saying have to do with Beyonce and Mariah Carey?
She's not saying a damned thing that has to do with either of them. She probably just went onto a forum or discord dedicated to them (their 'internet' kek) and sperged about body positivity for a couple posts.

It’s just brainless stan babble. “This is Beyoncé’s world/country/internet, we’re just living in it!” As though the quasi-deity celebrity in questions owns X, and the rest of us are mere ants in the afterbirth.

So let me sperg a bit on the lunch thing. Maybe it’s all of California, but all my life I’d understood that “we should catch up over coffee” is just a way of saying goodbye. Has nothing to do with youth, or even wanting to use anybody, it’s just a way of saying goodbye to somebody you don’t know well. Until now I didn’t realize it was abnormal. Is she implying there are places in the world where you’d say “let’s get coffee sometime”, and the other person would pull out a datebook? Because an answer like “when? Is Thursday good for you?” would shock me a lot more than, “we totally should. Nice seeing you!”

Is she trying to make fun of that male presenter in that one video? Because I am unclear on what that “if I could, but I won’t” shit was all about.
