Can anger and resentment really be helped by therapy? - Or woudl a couple visits to a gun range be more therapeutic?

I think about this a lot. I have a lot of built up resentment and anger for various reasons and have tried therapy but it doesn’t really soothe the resentment beast.
Should I just take up shooting at the gun range? Cuckada is very controlling of guns so a range would be the only option.
Would this he more therapeutic?

therapy is pure cope.
like, literally. the point of it is to make you cope with things instead of trying to resist them. buckbreak you into submission so you accept your lot in life instead of trying to fight it.

but shooting guns won't do anything about your anger either (unless you shoot the person you're angry at)

I was thinking as a harmless yet violent way to get out my anger. I have no idea why I think committing violence will take the anger away however

Because it looks cool in the lifestyle propaganda movies.

Firearms are too expensive to have as a "because I'm mad" hobby. Buy a nice axe (a bad one will dull quickly and make you more angry) and go chop some wood.

"get out my anger" is a media meme. doing random violent nonsense doesn't do anything except maybe exhaust you and tire you out. it might well distract you from your unhappiness for a while, but it's not a real solution, you're just treating symptoms, and the bad feelings will return sooner or later.
if you want to get rid of your anger and resentment, you need to find the problem that's causing these feelings and solve it. if that problem was caused by someone else, the only way to really solve that is to get back at them.
the problem is of course that this will get you in trouble with the law. is peace of mind worth spending time in prison? usually not, which is why most people just sit on their anger forever or cope their way around it.

Therapy can only work if the patient will put in the work. It is effective if you are willing to put in the deliberate and painful effort of growing the fuck up. A good therapist will force you to confront your own failures and inadequacies and ask you questions that, if you have any capacity for honest self reflection, will probably piss you off by making you realize your hypocrisy or motivated reasoning. It's not fun. It's hard god damn work, but if you are willing to do the work and you have a good talk therapist you can probably overcome most things.

Therapy fails for most people because they don't actually want to change anything about their life or their thinking and most people with fucked up psychology are genetic refuse and were destined to a life of misery anyway, so if it doesn't work for you after sincere, earnest and sustained effort... Don't reproduce, please.

If you are holding onto resentment and anger it's your fault, either in the sense that you have the capacity to let go and pridefully are unwilling to due to a lack of maturity, or you simply aren't capable of it. Sorry, some people are just brain broken.

The best therapy would do is help you realize that a lot of times anger is its own addictive entity.

Every single human being who's ever existed, no matter what they've been given, can find reasons to be angry or feel like they've been slighted. That feels nice and releases rewarding chemicals but if you make it a habit you'll always find something to be pissed off about and someone to blame.

Then you eventually grow old (without ever actually growing) and realize you've become Tom Tooter. That's not a fate anyone wants.

If you're feeling shitty you have to find other physical and mental ways to deal with it besides ruminating.

Psychotherapy is just a middling religion substitute. Like most ideologies that promise self improvement it has a low chance of working if you decide to believe in the magic of talk therapy. The likelihood of success has nothing to do with how hard you try just as the likelihood of witnessing a miracle is not dictated by how much faith you have.

If you are angry about nothing, for no reason, and you do not want to be, there are prescriptions for that (as a last resort. try other things first).

If you are angry for reasons, then do something about the things that make you angry. Is it the news? Stop reading it. Is it people? Move away from them. Is it the state of the world? Live in a way that will allow you to effect it.

If you want to "vent" just do intense exercise or start a screamo band.

good post overall but i'd strongly advise against any and all types of psych meds unless you really fucking need them because you have serious schizophrenia or shit like that
trying to fix your anger issues with drugs is a recipe for disaster

You have to learn how to let go of things and move on.

What’s your next goal in life? Focus on that instead of wasting time ruminating and seething to yourself.

Can't help you much with the resentment without knowing a lot more, but it would probably go away if you managed to be happy with the life you have.

For the anger, I wouldn't recommend shooting at all, you need physical release.
Go to the gym or buy a boxing sack.
Channel your anger while working out or wailing at the sack. Sweat the anger out until exhaustion. Do that atleast once a week.

If that doesn't work for you, you could try the more spiritual way, learn calming breathing exercises, pray or meditate, read stoic philosophy.

It's important to have some level of anger for things that are important to be angry about, but letting anger control your life is not productive either. When I was an angrier person, I found that reading Biblical works allowed me to more easily let go of things that did not really matter, and to forgive others at the expense of my own ego. Try to enjoy the beautiful things in life as well, spend time to garden, play some board games with friends or family, volunteer your time for the elderly or the young.

A specific work I read when I was very upset with the women in my life was "Paradise Lost". The depictions of Adam and Eve's relationship before and after the Fall helped me put my own relationships into perspective. After all, if Adam could find it in himself to forgive the woman whose actions had caused unfathomable misery to all of mankind, maybe forgiving others in my life wasn't as impossible a task as I first thought it would be.

The "common knowledge" that modern psychiatric drugs are singularly powerful and scaaaaaaaaaaary is so strange when the ever-growing realization in the field (that pharmaceutical companies are loathe to admit) is that they do absolutely fuck-all in the majority of cases.

You probably needed a less shitty therapist if that's your experience. Mine helped me work through my problems instead of giving me cope treatments

If you're solely relying on therapy to help, it won't. You have to add some other shit in there for yourself; like you mentioned regarding going to a range. Changing up your routine as well could help. Same with more physical activities.

They're both good options. Therapy ideally lets you analyse and manage your thoughts and feelings while shooting lets you viscerally express loud violent ideas safely.

Therapists are a lot like prostitutes though, you really need to find one you fit well with for the experience to be worthwhile.

The most important questions regarding if therapy will help is:

1) Do you know the source of your anger and resentment?

2) Do you understand why you are angry and resentful?

3) Is the anger and resentment you feel healthy and appropriate or maladaptive and inappropriate?

If you can answer "Yes" to 1 & 2 and "healthy and appropriate" to 3, therapy will do you no good.

If you answer "No" to either 1 or 2 or "maladaptive and inappropriate" to 3, therapy will help because it will help you understand why you feel this way and what to do about it in a healthy way.

Therapy is only good for people that don't understand the "where" and "why" of how they feel a certain way, and to help them deal with that if how they handle it is from a personal or social perspective is considered "inappropriate".
