Nick is claiming that he grew up hard in Texas in his youngest days. Its vaguely possible. Education in Texas often comes down to where you live. If your parents don't understand that and buy a house with the wrong address or location. the kids can end up in a school that by the standards of suburban Minnesota is going to be horrible.
But I think its all highly exaggerated on Nick's part. I think he probably went to a not best elementary school in Texas which had non-white people and working-class people. And compared to his high school years in Lakeville MN, it was probably a very different experience for him. But I doubt it was objectively anything as bad as what he describes.
Nick comes across as a born-and-raised suburban white nerd.

If Nick really had such a difficult schooling he'd have no doubt farmed the stories for content by now. As it stands, he's said very little about that period of his life, likely because it was neither troubling nor exceptional. Like most things, he had a bang average early life.
