Wanted to point out that Nick is not a lawyer. Just because he has a license to do something doesn't mean that's what he does. You can get licensed as a doctor but if you collect trash for a living you aren't a doctor, you're a trash collector.

Nick is claiming that he grew up hard in Texas in his youngest days. Its vaguely possible. Education in Texas often comes down to where you live. If your parents don't understand that and buy a house with the wrong address or location. the kids can end up in a school that by the standards of suburban Minnesota is going to be horrible.
But I think its all highly exaggerated on Nick's part. I think he probably went to a not best elementary school in Texas which had non-white people and working-class people. And compared to his high school years in Lakeville MN, it was probably a very different experience for him. But I doubt it was objectively anything as bad as what he describes.
Nick comes across as a born-and-raised suburban white nerd.

Is anything known about his parents political views now or 30 years ago? A guy working for Cray supercomputers could have afforded a private school. I know public schools weren't the same wasteland then as now but in my experience even then it was only the liberals making a political point by sending their kids to urban public schools that did so. Public suburban or specialty urban public magnet prep and immersion schools being the exception.
