Eric had a nigger moment while saying he was playing FAFO and could've caught lead legally. It is technically true on its face, but there's a high chance the jury will nullify to convict you anyways because of the location and "You shot a guy for that!?". Prosecutor would hammer that statement in a case as "Well he was planning to shoot these two dindu nuthins!"
I would say it's more of a libertarian moment. The idea that you're legally cleared to light up anyone that enters your home unannounced is something they (we if I'm honest) jerk off to, but realistically the warehouse employees will just yell at Riley to leave. You're very right in that declaring the intent to shoot Riley in cold blood would not help July's case if it came to be. I'm actually surprised Nick didn't point that out, maybe he was drunk and hungover (lol).

This part reminded me of that famous image of the bullfighter showing his disdain for the black bull by sitting down with his head in his hands. (the internet can't decide if this is him taunting the bull or genuine remorse leading him to quit bullfighting but this is irrelevant to this post)

I really enjoyed the part where Balldo takes July's slowness to answer as guilt and presses the question again, "WHAT DID THE BOOKS COST, ERIC?" When really Eric is just taking his time to formulate an answer due to being a Black nigger.
Nick just doesnt understand that while weasel words hypothetically work in a court room for very specific reasons. It actually has the opposite effect in the court of public opinion, because it makes people immediately dislike you.
It's funny that you say this, because not only should he understand this implicitly, it was his entire game plan during the Vic Lasagna saga. They never expected Lasagna to win in court, they just wanted to show the world how weird and scummy the accusers are by doing a public court case and publicly showing the depositions of Monica Rial and Ron Toye. There is still a user on KF named Serial Killer Ron Toye or something as a result of just how hard public opinion swung against them.
For example, the fact that he doesn't generally consider Riley a threat to his personal safety doesn't actually matter to a future self-defense case: what matters is how he feels in the specific instance if/when he shoots Riley in the face.
Perhaps Balldo's wet brain has bought into the idea that the law is something that a competent lawyer can exploit, like how an experienced player can exploit a video game's rules. Perhaps this is something that can be done in the right context, but not when facing someone who is being simply honest and straightforward. And unfortunately for him, July lacks the brain capacity to be anything else.
