As a historian my hot take will always be that history is like 99% momentum. The big events only ever slow things down or speed them up. So, going back in time and killing Hitler isn't going to stop WW2. Probably won't even let them win the war. And even if they do, the Germans just never had any real hope of perpetuating some great Thousand Year Reich. The Commies alone would always be such a fucking thorn in their side. To say nothing of the endless rebellions that every other nation would be carrying out. Because you can't really just return a people back to tyranny. Thats what set the Balkans and the Russians off in the turn of the century. And the progress they clawed up was fucking nothing compared to the West.
But, the best way to put it is theres a bit in Black Adder goes Forth that I really like where he explains that the Great War was because it was just too much trouble to not have a war. And really, that is just History in a nutshell. Human nature just finds it too much trouble to avoid doing something. And human nature always seeks to make itself more comfortable.
That might be how we got where we are now. Consoomer ridden bullshit, but I do wonder if the idea if being comfortable means we will push back against stale sludge of culture or if it means it is all we want.

Yeah, Russians often wrote songs about Anglo-American wars halfway across the world while they were getting invaded...Ever heard the 1812 overture?
