Your Superstitions and Strange Beliefs - or how to ward off bad luck, wicked juju, and the evil eye

i used to have terrible nightmares growing up and nothing would make them go away. then one day i got a dreamcatcher during a school field trip i hung it up on my wall and after that the nightmare stopped. it was hard to believe at first so i took it down and hid it in another room and the nightmares came back. so ever since then i have kept it hung up and have not had a nightmare since.
I wish I did get a dreamcatcher when I had those intense nightmare sequences. I never went to a doctor about those dreams because I never told anyone. I also do believe that every dream no matter how stupid, funny, silly, terrifying, or normal it is, it still posses some form of cryptic messaging either based on future event or just general pattern or instinct behavior.

-I believe most mined metals are toxic to faeries except for pure silver and gold. Because the mined metals come from our rape of the earth. We were so shitty we made them leave.

-Putting a silver coin in an animal's water can make them healthier or treat/cure an illness.
Copper bowls are better for pets than plastic or steel ones, probably for the same reason.

Dreams are ways of gaining information without risk to your physical body.
This covers simulations, the general patterns or instinct behavior you mention, "what-if" scenarios in the mundane, and things like astral projection and future prediction in the supernatural.

I'm not scared of black cats, broken mirrors, or walking under ladders, but DO NOT FUCK WITH OUIJA BOARDS.

This one falls under the principle of "be careful what you wish for". If you ask a spirit to show up, you might catch the attention of something that's more than you bargained for.
Funny you say that, I acquired s ouija board not too long ago.

I dont whistle at night and speak to animals at night either. And no walking through woods after dark. No staring at my reflection or shadow at night. No cursing while walking through doorways, especially even entering from the outside. No making fun of someone's physical or (real) mental disability. No wishing death on anyone.

So in a way the gorilla with bull horns and a whip like tail is real.

Is there a dream interpretation thread? I'd make one but people talking about their totally super interesting and Cu-RaZy dreams is sort of like describing in detail a model railway set or Minecraft build; fun for them, but not so much the listener.

This is a new one to me. I know there are lots of superstitions about doorways/thresholds, a family member says she never enters a house for the first time with her left foot for example.

I'm not sure about the existence of classical vampires, the blood-sucking kind, but I know for a fact that certain people are energy/emotional vampires. Now speaking of vampires, second thread query, is there one for cryptids yet?

The occult is real and although a lot of the wiccan/girlboss witch stuff is a larp, there's an element of reality to it. I don't mess with ouji boards or any other attempt to commune with some vague "beyond."

We have some sort of intangible way of sensing someone's motivations or intentions. Some people are better at this than others. I guess the best way to describe it is a "vibe" but surely there's a better word.

A lot of alien and cryptid sightings are legit and are demonic manifestations.

Satanic influence is real and common although less spooky wooky like the Satanic Panic might make it out to be.

I'd say a very understandable example is the story of Harrison Ford (or whoever, doesn't matter) who met a little boy and his mother. The boy was excited beyond belief and the mother said, "He's watched Star Wars over 100 times!" and Harrison Ford (or whoever) said, "Can you promise me one thing?" And the boy said yes, anything. And Ford said, "Never watch Star Wars again." And the mother says "How horrible!" and the boy cries, and end scene.

But we all understand that he was trying to save the little boy from obsessive fanaticism.

It's not all about literal daycare baby-raping circles.
It's the difference between a man who grows up to have a nice family life, build generational wealth, and build to society.... and a man who is a pawn in a wordly world. On a surface level sure "there's nothing wrong with being a Marvel fan!!!!" but once you're past the bottom ranks of human existence. that's an absolutely shitty reason to live life. Same with Football, fashion, card games like MtG or Pokemon, roleplay, lots of things.

It's kinda like how some people can drink alcohol and it's not an issue, but we all recognize alcohol has extreme dangerous potential and ruins lives. The worldly world in general is the same way.

That's to say, I'm the crazy motherfucker who thinks it's literally satan to wear clothes with brands/logos/etc on them unless I have a damn good reason, and SINCERELY pulls the "it's against my religious beliefs to participate in Hawaiian Spirit Day" trump card when I get pressured by the bosses to join. I am a modest male, which unlike being a modest woman in today's society, people often don't realize is a thing for me until they've known me for quite a while. No shorts, no bright colors unless it's hi-ves for a reason, no tank tops, etc. I don't really expect this to be widely adopted or that men even should in general, it's just a personally held belief.

Also, you get bad juju if you sit in an meeting before your superiors show up. You must stand until all of your superiors have arrived and taken seats. Same applies in general if your boss is without a chair, you should stand up. I don't think this is just rude or something- I think it's the type of bad vibe juju that gets you fired down the line, even if your boss has never created that type of work culture.

Are you white? If you're not white you might want to check your vitamin D levels if you live in the northern hemisphere.
I take Vitamin D supplement anyways since I work the graveyard shift.
Despite what you might think I'm pretty tan at least in the summer because I walk outside most everywhere and I DO wear short-sleeves.
Also I do go swimming in pants and a shirt, this is one of the occasions people realize I have "a thing."

Another superstition for your troubles, I open all the curtains in the morning and close them all at night. Very bad luck to have open curtains at night, even in another part of the house. Bad juju get in house.
It's also bad luck to lie to a cat: they know. You can lie to dogs.

There are people that are legitimate ghouls (cannibalistic corpse munchers). You can at it’s just me hating on the homeless and the poor but beady eyes, jagged teeth, and stringy hair with a skinny body and a portly belly. Don’t get me started and the smell of the corpses that were probably devoured. Ugh.

That sounds so fun though, I would totally make an offering of coconut or something to Pele.

That's good for sun protection but a long sleeve rash guard and long swim pants would probably be more comfortable. Something like this:

i fully believe this sort of thing to be true especially if you really sit and think about where you were in life during the time the dream occurred often times there is a very subtle message or feeling hidden in a dream that you may be unwilling to admit exists or unaware that it exists in general.

sometimes dreams are also just mashed up memories and images your brain has saved over time. they are always worth looking into though because you never know what you might find.

Dreams just tend to be what we feed ourselves in day-to-day life regurgitated and chopped up in various ways. I don't really believe in prophetic dreams unless it's in a Biblical context because Biblically speaking, Christians CAN have prophetic dreams or visions, but those need a success and accuracy rate of 100%.

I wouldn't call it common but terminal lucidity does definitely happen sometimes.
There's a (possibly) related phenomenon to terminal lucidity called deathbed visions, or dreams of dying. It involves terminally ill people having extraordinarily lucid visions of the dead, usually family members (although very occasionally friends or religious figures). They usually communicate forgiveness and reconciliation at the end of life, trying to make sense of the past (good or bad) and bring it to some kind of resolution. This happens even in people who are mentally normal and healthy, and whose illnesses are purely physical.

What's interesting to me about these is how virtually unknown they are compared to terminal lucidity and deathbed visions, even though they're FAR more common. I've heard (probably optimistic, but still) estimates of up to 50% of terminally ill patients.

I'm not sure whether this even counts as a superstition. The phenomenon is real. I have absolutely no idea whether it's supernatural, but I'm open to the possibility.

Última edición:
  • Whenever I interact with a religious leader in public (ie a nun, rabbi, priest, etc). I feel the instant need to be as nice and agreeable to them as possible. This has only happened to me a couple times, but I think it's my brain not wanting me to go to Hell or something.
  • When I go to the beach, I need to collect every shell with exposed nacre. I'm not sure if it's just me being autistic about shells or some type of comfort thing. I have jars and jars of these because I live in a coastal community
  • I also think that driving behind Subaru or a minivan is a bad omen

Is that dreams by Christians, or dreams with a Christian theme? Because I once dreamt I was the Archangel Michael, resplendent in plate of gold, vanquishing the Devil. Except Satan had the face of my ex-husband.

I have strange coincidences that happen when I'm relaxing doing puzzles in the evening while watching TV. I'll be filling in a word and the word will be said on the TV at the same time. Recently I was watching Turkey Tom and he was talking about his Bulgarian heritage and my ears perked up because one clue was Capital of Bulgaria. He then went just moments later to say the name of the capital. (It's Sofia, fwiw). Thanks TT.

I also have a slight history of when someone crosses me (like saying they are going to take my dog for keeps and then turning around and bringing him to the high-kill pound when I had to move out of state) bad things happen to them. Several men have died (like the above-mentioned dog killer) before the age of 40. Started with a long-forgotten-named attempted sexual assaulter who died a year later on Lake Michigan when I was a teen, then just kept kind of racking up. I can name three more men pushing daisies off the top of my head.

One woman I had argued with in a bar was literally moments away from possible serious injury as I fumed in the bathroom and wished the worst upon her - she had left and was outside waiting to cross the street to her car and someone just plowed into the rear of it, right in front of her. Fuck you Joanne.

I'm sure it's coincidental (or am I?) but I enjoy the schadenfreude nonetheless.

I usually do the sign of the cross when I see a dead animal while on the road. Partially to protect myself from the same fate, partially to pray that the critter found its way into the afterlife.
