Hardware encoding is head and shoulders better than it used to be, but it might be Linus demands MAXIMUM QUALITY so everything is software encoded to a stupid level.

Really high resolution cameras can be useful when doing detail work, basically the edges and rough surfaces of objects "pop" more, when when rendered at lower resolutions. In theory his editors could pan and zoom a lot more for impact editing and such. I haven't seen it. The cameramen mostly shoot mid distance from a standing position. From what I can tell a mid range camcorder would do the job mint and cost a fraction.

Honestly, when I first saw LTT going cinema grade years back I thought it was great and a sign of the growth of a more independent market and pushing of quality.
Now I just think it's retarded and unnecessary as they did nothing with it. You're not doing low light macro shots you dildo, your studios probably have more than a thousand watts of LED lighting each and the camera work has never developed beyond what was easiest.

Not good enough for Linus! He bought 12K Blackmagic cameras even though the format they use barely works with the editing tools LMG uses. I think they ended up flipping them. (no doubt at a massive loss)

I don't know what their setup is, I seem to remember them using Premiere. Don't know what they use for color correcting. If they they are color correcting the raw footage then they can just export and encode it with H.265. Encode/Decode engines on modern GPUs are amazing, I can scrub fairly compressed 4k with a 5700xt. No reason to edit with RAW or archive RAW for YouTube IMHO. I don't imagine Floatplane is that much better as well, though I've never heard anything bad about the video quality over there.

Linus buys close to $100,000 worth of hardware based on hype and bitches that the ingest procedure has to change. What? I really don't see why a YouTube channel with studios needs to do color correct more than once so why do they need the RAW files to work in Premiere. It's not like you can apply most of the same adjustment layers you can in Photoshop, oh wait, you can. The lack of support on their ingest software is obviously annoying, but is the kind of thing in spec sheets are for. Read those before you buy.

Things like this are often said with resolution upgrades, but you really don't notice until you get used to what you have.

I have a 4k monitor now and any video, games, porn in 1080p is noticeably less quality to me to where I'm a snob. I used to be a poorfag with shit internet that thought who'd ever need more than 720p, it's clear enough.

Does anyone know the proper ratio to where the higher and higher resolution has the most benefit? I'm not a resolution snob, so I'm probably off; but the higher resolutions seem like they'd only be appropriate on a larger screen (like theatre/IMAX); because all I'm getting is that they're to make bigger screens less pixelated, and unless you're on some sort of monster fucking screen, especially one you're 1-3 feet away from at your desk, the detail and what your eye catches is negligent.

Since I'm also a videogame fag, I played on a CRT until about 2010 or so and anything above 1080 feels like a peen flex and waste of data size/rates to me. 1080 looks plenty crisp, I just need a stable framerate.

Edit: I'm also curious how Linus doesn't understand the Brand Tax. You buy Hollywood tier cameras, you're probably getting a quality product; but at the same time, you're paying the brand tax. People mock Apple for their bad product at an insane price, it's the brand tax. This shouldn't be a foreign concept to Linus... ... ... and what the fuck is a 12k? What do you mean the ratio with most benefit? It's all just about the size, resolution, and the resulting pixel density. Given you seem to be on 1080p, I am assuming you are on a 24 inch monitor? 1440p at 32 inch would be the same density and no clarity improvement, 27 inch would be both an increase in size and pixel density. At 4k both 27 and 32 would be an improvement in ppi but then you need the hardware capable of gaming in 4k.

Your not going to be trying to change the tone of a scene so you need to push up the blues or something. It's a tech channel were basically all the lighting is the same. Color correct to a spec as part of ingest and encode in H.265

If there already invested in an Adobe workflow I can see not wanting to change it. But DaVinci can make the videos into something Premiere plays nice with and it comes with the camera.

Maybe I'm old school, but what happened to just cutting proxies then working with EDL/XML in online/finishing/grading program of choice?

Given Linus's tendencies to go over the top with most expensive X or highest number of Y when it's not even the best solution, I think the only purpose in doing stuff like that is to simply claim they use biggest most highest jiggapixel resolution ever. It's a vanity thing, which is a perfect reflection of the channel actually. Zero informative content, low value entertainment, all show and no purpose beyond show.

ease of use.
resolve is powerful but very unintuitive and with it being designed for cinema work, its frustrating when you wanna use it to make a YouTube video.
im not even fucking right now, ive run into less bugs and crashes with premire then resolve.

my last project didnt even have any raws, just videos from youtube and discord, and problems such as. the timeline/fusion comps not playing and nested tinelines causing outright crashes were a pain to deal with.

something that should've taken a day to make and render out a final product, took me a week. while having its own after effects built in (and its node based compositing is absolutely delightful and refreshing to work with) you'd be better off sticking with premire or vegas.

unless you run linux and want something better then kdn live in which case go for it.

That's the most annoying thing to me I think. Speaking as a guy who uses all types of equipment in his job, be it a cheap hammer from Harbor Freight or a 8000 dollar welder, you should worry first about what you need. Nice gear is nice, but you also need to play by its rules. If you don't want to revamp your entire setup, swallow your pride and go for good enough. People have made better videos with far worse equipment.

It's no surprise that Linus pushes for high-end gear for the sake of high-end gear, that's been most of his content to date. He's always fallen into that category of PC enthusiast that doesn't do much with his expensive system running the latest and greatest hardware, using games and productivity tools more for benchmarking than entertainment or making anything of note. Gearqueers exist throughout all hobbies, and they should all be laughed at.
