Unpopular Opinions About Western Animation

I found an explanation in the comments, apparently the whipcrack is actually to distract from terrible animation. It makes it look snappy, look like something has happened, when they couldn't be bothered to draw the limb swinging.
Everything after the first season was animated in Canada, so...

Responding to something @TVBForever said in the Western Animation topic (my response wound up being more appropriate for this thread).

The 2000s was an okay decade. By far the best thing about it was it was the point where people began to realize progress was progressing too fast, older stuff started getting made available again (or in some cases, for the first time), and some cartoons from that period were okay....

But sticking just to western animation, I can't call it "good" so much as I can call it "not as bad as today." Which to me is a little like saying CalArts drawings are good because they're not as bad as Sonichu panels.

(....Actually, there's food for thought: is Chris-chan's art worse than CalArts?....)

Say what you will about my post in the Western Animation topic) a few days back where I acted like a kid in a candy store over finding a bunch of obscure 90s cartoons on Youtube... I've never seen anyone demonstrate even half that much genuine enthusiasm for anything from the 2000s. In fact the only time people ever get positive about the 2000s is when a critic (usually me) says they sucked.... and then the defense is usually weak.

Or alternatively, a woke-ified reboot is announced, suddenly it's "the original was such a classic, how dare they ruin it!"

I'm willing to bet that at some point in the next three years someone will get the bright idea to do a reboot of The Life and Times of Juniper Lee, and when it happens, suddenly people will come out of the woodwork saying how great the original show was and how dare the wokies ruin it... when, let's face it, absolutely none of the people having that reaction had ever even heard of The Life and Times of Juniper Lee beforehand.

It reminds me of the 4Kids anime days. Not gonna defend their dubbing practices but in retrospect it is kinda lame how any time they licensed the show, suddenly the original anime was some pure artistic expression that they were defiling with their dub... when let's face it, a lot of the anime they "ruined" weren't very good in the first place.

Point being: 2000s cartoons only ever become "liked" when they become a rallying point. In my experience, even people who grew up in that era have no real attachment to it.

If you’re going to do these stupid rants why don’t you just make a blog?

Lmao, the only jobs getting outsourced to India are hard labour industrial gigs. You really think pajeets can hold a pencil properly, much less animate? And France has their own brand of animation, US doesn't outsource shit to France. Canada outsources to France and occasionally collaborates with them. US outsources to korea exclusively and sometimes Japan, that's it.

You're just an 80s fag and possible gen xer. I still miss Ben 10, it was the first big popular teens television animation i watched, I was 6 when it aired on television. I still watch it when they air reruns, it is a good show. Chowder, Secret Saturdays and Generator Rex were good shows and i still miss them. Hell even more niche eurofag animated shows like pingu, miffy, Oswald, Madeline, kipper and Noddy were really good kids shows which i still miss. I think you grew out of animation in the 2000s and were viewing 2000s shows from an adult lens which is why you're not attached to them. I can assure you, zoomers like myself still miss 2000s animated shows.

Agreed. I loved all the shows you just listed. I have fond memories of many of the cartoons I used to watch so does my sister. So I am very defensive when the above said Generation X'ers don't have fondly remembered cartoons

Oh, and also some Canadian shows in the 2000s are surprisingly good. Stuff like Kappa Mikey, Viva Pinata, Storm Hawks and early-Total Drama. I'm more of a late-millennial born in 94, but I still was raised more in the 2000s than in the 90s. That's why I miss the 2000s so much, especially in pop culture.

X'er here, we had had our share of good and shitty cartoons in the 80's.

Wow, imagine someone getting pissed off that someone posted an unpopular opinion in a topic called "Unpopular Opinions."

I miss the 2000s, just not the cartoons particularly. I remember kinda liking Ben 10 and the original Teen Titans (that was 2000s, wasn't it?) and occasionally watching a few others, but I recall this being the age where I really started looking back to the past. Things like Boomerang and even early CN and Toonami helped in that regard.

There's a topic in Deep Thoughts where people talk about missing the 2000s, and I believe I said there that yeah, I do too... but I tend to usually miss more general cultural vibes and things that existed at the time, like it was a time when flea marketing was a huge part of my life (helping with that whole "rediscovering the past" thing) and things like retro games weren't yet collector's items.

Here's a funny thing... sometimes its not even important that an actual thing be good or even mostly good. Like legit some of my best experiences with retro games or anime lately have been ones I've never heard of that were actually kinda crap, but they still let me relive the experience of going to rentals and trying out random things without worrying that I might not be getting the best of the best.

Also honestly, sometimes garbage is more interesting than quality. The thing with the classics is they get too well-known and dissected to the point where I'm like "can we talk about something else, please?"

Plus, and this is a personal major pet peeve here, a lot of clickbait articles label shows like Invader Zim as 90s shows, but have actually came out a decade after (with the case of Invader Zim, it first aired in 2001 and was cancelled in 2002). People tend to forget, but when they are reminded, they act as if it counts because "muh pilot episode aired in 1999, so that counts" but it doesn't, and it would be like saying the Fairly Oddparents came out in the 90s because of the series of shorts that aired late in that decade. It just does not count.

What are you going on about?
There's already been examples of quality shows from the 2000's in this thread, so I won't add onto the pile. I know plenty of people nostalgic for 2000's cartoons.
I just want to say, I think you just have exceptionally shitty taste if you don't like anything from the 2000's.

I hate that people think of 80s cartoons as mostly He-Man and Transformers. There were lots of quirky, imaginative titles if one cared to look:

The original Ducktales was made in the 80s, and introduced many people to the vast universe of the Scrooge McDuck comics. Disney produced other cartoons in that era that would gain big (and perverted) fanbases.

The Simpsons was also an 80s cartoon, and it was groundbreaking in helping turn the idea of the sitcom on its head. The writing in the early seasons was also legendary.

The Real Ghostbusters combined comedy and horror - a rare feat in those days, and was fairly entertaining until some idiot consultants ruined the show.

Muppet Babies and Beetlejuice were weird cartoons with devoted fanbases and lots of surreal imagery.

Dangermouse. - a comedy sendup of spy movies which took the piss out of itself a lot of the time.

Ulysses 31 - What you'd get if French comic artist Moebius had designed a science fiction kids series.

The Mysterious Cities of Gold - a serialized historical adventure that veered into Science fiction near the end.

I was going to mention ExoSquad, but then I remembered that was a 90s title. I'll give it an honorable mention because it was a genuine stab at making a mature war series with a continuing storyline and developing characters, not just a giant toy commercial. They failed a lot of the time and there were inconsistencies, but they at least tried...
