Iirc, it has to do with the timing of the egg splitting. Earlier twinning splits mean that each zygote has more time to form DNA independently as it continues to grow, leading to a higher chance of mutations.

Eggs can split anywhere between days 3 and 13. Twins formed in the two cell split state are the most likely to develop genetic mutations, this would be at day 3.

But the later identical twins split, the more likely they are to share a placenta and amniotic sack (risks strangulation in the womb from each others' umbilical cords), or even being cojoined twins if they split too late..

That’s true. The human body is honestly wild. You have stuff like de novo mutations where nothing is genetic but you get a random occurrence of something. Then you have once in a lifetime stuff like sirenomelia or a Brooke Greenberg situation where there’s absolutely no answer and no identifiable cause, and a clinician is very unlikely to see another case of it in their career.

I'll never forget the Patricia Stallings case. Woman was accused of poisoning and killing her child with antifreeze. It says he was normal until 2020, when he got an anoxic brain injury from near-drowning. I wonder if they have an official diagnosis of locked in syndrome. I think that is from something that affects the parts of the brain that control movement but not cognition. I don't think an anoxic injury could be selective like that.
I think he is potato and his caregivers are coping. They should have all kinds of brain imaging if he's really diagnosed, not just an EEG. They probably are scared to know the extent of the damage.

Locked-in syndrome is caused by any lesion affecting the ventral pons, and midbrain; this includes vascular lesions, masses, infections, traumas, and demyelinating disorders. The most common cause is a vascular complication in the form of a hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke.

It mentions 2 brain areas being damaged that causes it but I'm pretty sure anoxic injury from near-drowning would cause global (all areas) brain damage.

This could be bad news for his level of consciousness. Thinking and memory are essential for consciousness. Think of an end-stage dementia patient who doesn't know what utensils are for and can only communicate by moaning.
If he really has locked in syndrome from near drowning and that is caused by damage to the ventral pons and midbrain, it presumably means it would have had to get through his "thinking" brain parts first.

At 1 min, brain cells begin to die. At 3 mins, you’re looking at brain damage. 10, many brain cells are dead, recovery unlikely. 15 mins, recovery is impossible.

This is why cpr is very important and yes you may break ribs but broken ribs is better than brain damage.

He was the one driving an ATV on the family's farm when he swerved to avoid hitting their cow that liked chasing the ATV. He drove into the pond and the kid's arm was trapped by the seat belt, keeping him underwater all that time.

They didn’t mention if he could respond meaningfully with his eyes. Usually those that are locked in can communicate with their eyes. They also mentioned him rolling over on his own and squeezing hands which would eliminate him being locked-in. My guess is he is too brain damaged to ever function normally and has little to no awareness yet not brain dead enough for the doctors to encourage just letting him die. Or maybe they did and the family just didn’t admit it. According to them doctors suggested putting him in a home.
That grandma made me want to crawl out of my skin and run away screaming with the way she was nonstop stroking him.

Not exactly locked in syndrome, but Guillain-Barre can basically do the same thing - flaccid paralysis that starts after an infection (often gastrointestinal illness) or immunisation, caused by your immune system attacking your nerves.

Usually people get lower limb weakness, and if recognised and treated with IVIg (immune antibodies) can resolve with a lot of Physiotherapy.
But if you're really unlucky, it can go all the way up to your neck and leave you completely aware but unable to move a muscle, not even breathe. Again, it can resolve but it's a very not fun time in the meantime.
