From what I’ve seen they only get interested in older games if they see their favorite streamer retard playing it. My youngest brother is 10 years younger than I am. He legitimately believes that 16 bit era games are virtually unplayable and have nothing to offer in comparison to modern games.

I’ve tried recommending classic rpgs like Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star and the like, and all I hear is “bUt ThEyRe NoT dArK sOuLs So ThEy SuCk!”

I don't understand why retro purists are so upset about cheating and save states.
As if no one ever owned an Action Replay or Game Genie.
You should have walk to school in the snow, uphill, both ways, like I/we/they used to! Or some such mentality. It seems like gatekeeping, but deep down it's really "pls copy me as closely as possible so we can better relate on the topic"

Guess it depends on what an old game is to you. My kids enjoy super nintendo and the occasional nes game. But if i put them in front of an intellevision like i grew up with, they don't have the ability to enjoy it and they hate the sound effects.

Well, at the very least they can have some level of appreciation of how far we came, right? (assuming they are old enough to do so).

Me: hurting kids is wrong
Your brother: Chrono Trigger sucks, its not dark souls
Me: *throw him against the wall wrestler styled* Nevermind...

what games would you consider to be "overrated".
I can list them all if you have a few years to spare.

Seriously though, a lot of the classic 90s PC games don't hold up. I didn't get my own PC until after Half-Life 2 was out, and over the years I've been going back and playing the classics. Games like Quake, Doom, Half-Life, they hold up to various degrees, but games like System Shock 2, Marathon 2, and Mech Warrior 2 don't. Some of them are decent, or even good, but they're often insanely overhyped.

Generally speaking any game that requires homework goes in the trash. eg. System Shock 2. Broadly speaking you have three builds. Melee, Shooting, and Psi. I went psi for my first run and struggled. Turns out psi is for experts who know all the enemy weaknesses, where to get specific things, and when in the game specific enemies appear. It was supposedly my fault for being a dumb person who went psi for their first run. Ok, maybe that was my fault. So how about shooting? Guns dissolve on contact with air and are not viable at all. Again, it's supposedly common knowledge that you're meant to change values in an ini file to make guns viable. That's two thirds of the games builds that completely fuck over a new player through no fault of their own.

Or you can play Bioshock. That works too.

The problem with a lot of the pre-NES consoles is the games are so primitive they barely hold your attention for more than 5 or 10 minutes. High scores are nice and all but they only work when there's a point of comparison.

I mentioned Goldeneye but a better example might be the Tony Hawks games that were everywhere when I was a teenager, but without that social element the high scores feel meaningless beyond what it needed to progress.

SS2 is a weird example because the most expedient early game build for new players also leads you to the most overpowered build.

Cameras are fucking with you so you put points in Hacking, and all the weapons you have at the start are Standard, so you put points in that, and then those fuckers keep breaking all the time so you put points in Maintenance.

Fucking around with anything else is just for the challenge.

I should try that if I ever revisit it.

It's a shame because there's lots of things to like about it. The enemies telling you to run away is really creepy, but many things (mostly on the gameplay side) fall flat. I can see why people like the game, but the hype it gets as a perfect game are shown to be false once I start playing. If people had said "the atmosphere is great but it's about as balanced as a one legged man on a unicycle" I think I might have been kinder to it.

I think a lot of why zoomers don't like older games is because they're often overhyped. There aren't large swarms of Gen X and Millennials constantly going on about Timesplitters and Burnout, so younger people are kinder to them. In contrast, there's no end to the people who won't shut up about how Daggerfall is way better than Skyrim, but Daggerfall doesn't hold up at all.

I mentioned Goldeneye
Goldeneye imo is still fun to play esp
with the 1964 mod.

SS2 irrc was because the game was rushed so its not a surprise that the game is a buggy mess sides always preferred deus ex over it also

<bioshock
<good game
<lol
Bioshock and its consequences have been a disaster for immersive sims.

@Judge Dredd taking zoomers vidya opinions seriously is like taking life advice from drug dealers seriously ( trust me on this since i am a zoomer myself )

Nobody gives a shit about Atari games except boomers. That era is way too primitive to capture the interest of anyone that doesn't have nostalgia for it. Outside of that though you'll find a significant number of zoomies that like retro games. The double-edged sword of social media is that it allows weird subcultures to flourish. Retro-style indie games and art scenes that revive old aesthetics lead a lot of people to getting into older games, and I don't see those going away anytime soon.

It is, but it's hard to get new people into due to the weird controls, the lack of checkpoints, some bullshit like the Control level. Plus I don't even know if young people care about James Bond any more.

Bioshock is okay. I could complain about certain elements like the respawning chambers or the hacking mini game.

But despite all that, it does most of the same things System Shock 2 does, but is much more accessible.

I remember at some event like Nintendo direct or E3 or something, there were a bunch of indie games that replicated the early DS 3D aesthetic. I remember gen-x/millennials being confused and wondering how people could be nostalgic for something so new, even though the DS came out more than 15 years ago.

Tbf IF DUKE FUCKING NUKEM is still meme'ed on to this day ( forever leaks prob helped in zoomers learning about Duke ) also i recall you mentioned duke 3d being mediocre which disagree on but still what's the reason. @Judge Dredd also bioshock isnt even a immersive sim its a thinly veiled shooter disguised as a immersive sim

I think it depends on what games/systems you like.

Nintendo gamers are basically obligated to play older games. I grew up with Nintendo, and thus, I have been playing NES and N64 games since the early 2010s, when I was in elementary school. I used to buy all sorts of N64 games from the Wii Shop such as Mario 64, Kirby 64, Smash, Majora’s Mask, and Mario Kart. I also bought tons of GC titles. I practically owned every Mario game for the system along with Air-Ride, Pikmin, Prime, Viewtiful Joe, and more. The Nintendo fandom is one of those fanbases where, if you wanted to be a part of it, you had to get some exposure to all their consoles. Not sure if they are still like this, but the late Wii and U era certainly was.

In comparison, XBOX has like no retro game scene and PlayStation has a split audience meaning it both does and doesn’t. Nowadays, if you are part of, say, The Ratchet fandom, you will probably be coaxed into playing PS2 and PS3 games at least. PlayStation has a growing retro scene given their graveyard of IPs, connecting the fanbase like never before to shill PS3 and prior. On the opposite side, PlayStation’s modern base thinks retro titles are shit and wouldn’t go back any further than PS4.

Finally, you have PC in which I will just say yes as Steam makes shit easily accessible and the people who use it are gamers, not normies like XBOX and PlayStation users.

Retro purist is just a code tag for eBay asshole speculator.

Back in the day you could mail 3D Realms about the level editor and they would mail you back a floppy with Build. Free of charge. This sorta stuff just doesn't happen anymore.

I was just recently playing Destroy All Humans! for the PS2, and I was blown away as to how an alien apocalypse game was the pure definition of escapism in one sitting.

If anything, I’m still young, but I miss the days when gaming put entertainment and fun first.

I love System Shock 2 but anyone that says its perfect is retarded. The skill balance makes no sense. Repair is useless just use Maintenance. You only need one in research and you can research most of the stuff in the game. Exotic builds are for sadists. Like others have said just max standard weapons, get some hacking, one point in heavy weapons for the grenade launcher and maybe psi late game for the buffs.

I had no problem finishing the game with an Energy Weapons build.
Running around and fucking everything up with my laser rapier was pretty fun. And it felt like I was becoming a scarier monster than the enemies in the game.
