5th-grade student’s exam question has left adults stumped - ITT: Kiwis MATI because they can't Math

(Article, archive)
One sibling has been left scratching their head at their younger brother’s Year 5 math exam.

The question, shared to Reddit, asks students to figure out how many pages are in a book.

“Klein read 30 pages of a book on Monday and one eighth of the book on Tuesday,” the question read.

“He completed the remaining quarter of the book on Wednesday. How many pages are there in the book?”

Some social media users were immediately stumped by the question.

One person commented: “And now we can all see why “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” worked as a game show.”

“Today I learned I would fail fifth grade math,” another said on the thread.

One passionate person said: “I always think to my self; ‘Ugh. People should really be tested with basic skills before they’re allowed to go out into society.”

“And then I see this and realize I shouldn’t go out into society LOL!”

Not everyone agreed the question difficult.

“Not to be rude, but what is interesting about this,” one said.

“It looks just like any other math problem that I’ve done in 5th grade.”

Someone with a PhD in engineering, with a focus on applied mathematics, said it wasn’t difficult to work out but it came with the assumption that Klein started the book on Monday.

Once you have that, you divide 30 pages by five to see how much one eighth is worth, with the answer being six.

Math lovers then just do the simple multiplication of eight times six, with the answer being 48, and the equation is solved.

Really hate how math illiterate our society is. This problem is a basic equation

30+x/8+×/4=x

where x is the #of pages read, and the 3 counts they give you have to add up to x.

we multiply by 8 to make our lives easier

240+x+2x=8x

then we bring the xs to one side
240 = 8x-x-2x
add the xs
240= 5x
then divide by 5
48=x

I hate people who suck at math

Teach them how to do basic math first. This shit is for people who plan to go to college and most of the population doesn't do that.
Good God, the level of retarded in this thread just keeps going up.

I worked as a mindless retail drone at a hardware store and used algebra and basic trig on a daily basis.

brother you can't even get a job in the US military unless you score high enough on the ASVAB, which includes algebra equations similar to this one in this question

ok honest question if the question were written with just numbers

30x +3/8x=X

What would be lost? The student still has to solve the problem by the same method, the same logic is involved.

Without the unnecessary confusion that trying to ignore your right brain creates.
are you retarded?

you lose the ability to do this

None of you actually know anything about education, at all.

I’m a last year grad student and the astounding ignorance of how pedagogical practices are actually implemented and what works and what does not is utterly beyond you.

The "implemented pedagogy" has led us to a society where a large fraction of adults can't solve a fifth grade math problem.

American public school is a huge waste of time.

You can tell who peaked in high school because they think all that shit matters in adulthood and feel a deep need to prove they can solve basic math problems on the internet.

They avoid talking about pedagogy but just show how they can solve it and expect a surrogate teacher to give them head pats.

I don't know what this is. It's not how I remember math. Is this the new math people with kids were complaining about during the pandemic?

This is what I did in notepad because I wanted to see if I could figure it out. Put the 1/8 and 1/4 together. The rest was 30 pages. Easy.

1/8
2/8
____
3/8

30 pages

5/8 = 30
30/5

6
1/8 = 6

6 x 8= 48

Sure you did. I worked in a hardware store as well and never once had to do any algebra and trigonometry. Then again, they weren't launching any rockets or crazy shit like that at Ace Hardware when I worked there. Maybe you worked at one of the NASA hardware stores.

I'm gonna jump in and inform you that CuzinEd is genuinely stupid, just check his post history.

I think they try to give very specific ways to solve "types" of problems these days, but I'm not sure either. Whatever it is, I don't think it's working but I'm not sure how well methods worked back when I was in school either.

This is basic math. You just figure out that the 30 pages was 5/8 of the book and then multiply the 30 by the inverse to find what the total number of pages was. It's in elementary school that you learn about fractions like this so it's a pretty simple problem which some people are over complicating.

It was all good in high school but a complete shit show after. LOL

I am used to dealing with faggot nerdlingers on the internet.

Yet you're unable to teach us anything about teaching, the field you're such an expert in.

The practice of how to convert a situation to a mathematical formula, as well as a brief reminder about common denominators.

Also, what's with adding an x to your constant term and capitalizing the right-side x?

I know my teachers did things you consider unthinkable, and I know my teachers made fun of rural teachers for thinking they were qualified to work in a city school with modern tools.

Educational standards and norms vary from district to district. Just ask anyone who bitches about there being good schools and bad schools and why can't we force rich students to go to poor districts?

Lazy, I genuinely haven't had an algebra class since my senior year in HS.

As for your former point that is true I'll concede

you teach whatever text mcmillian or pearson sold your school district. you take a field trip to the holocaust museum.

you use all the skills gleaned from behavioral learning classes to babysit kids.

I am serious. He literally went to my profile to whine at me through text about what I posted like a faggot. Not just him but other weak ass faggots as well. They spammed by profile up with stupid shit. It wasn't even funny stupid shit. Just a bunch of autistic basement dwelling nerdlinger loser faggots screeching because of something I posted and they couldn't handle it. Downvoting my post like a Reddit faggot wasn't enough. They had to spam stupid shit on my profile. It was so awful I had to turn access to profile off. LOL

I did Algebra and trigonometry in high school. Not going to lie but math was not my strongest subject in school. I always did better with history and things like that. When I was in high school, they gave us calculators and that's what we did the algebra and trigonometry on. Those Ti-88 graphing calculators.

It was boring as shit and I never used it after I left high school.

For me, it was like this:

First off, the words aren’t that interesting. Skimmed to the last line and saw they were asking how many total pages. Double checked they were asking for how many total pages and nothing else.

30 pages were on one side, 3/8 on the other

30 = 5/8,
30/5 = 6, so,
1/8 = 6,
6 X 8 = 48

Literally less than thirty seconds.

I think anyone who got exposed to common core got their head fucked up.

I’m a factory worker. I guess we have to be practical about shit and can’t spend time looking at problems like this through the lens of how they effect trans lives relativistically
