UN Canada looks to delay assisted dying for mentally ill

Canada's government has said it wants to delay expanding medically assisted dying for people with mental illness.

Access to euthanasia was set to broaden in March to people whose sole conditions are mental disorders.

The expansion has come under fire from some experts, who worry that it offers death as an option to people with suicidal thoughts.

Supporters of the measure, however, say excluding people with mental illness is discriminatory.

The expansion of assisted dying to people with mental illness would mean that Canada would have one of the most liberal euthanasia laws in the world.

Canada's Justice Minister David Lametti acknowledged on Thursday that more time might be needed to get the country's Medical Assistance in Dying law right.

"We want to be prudent, we want to move in a step-by-step way so that we don't make mistakes," Mr Lametti said at a news conference.

Canada made medically assisted death legal in September 2016. The legislation was passed after Canada's Supreme Court ruled that doctors could help patients who had severe and incurable medical conditions to die.

Advocacy group Dying with Dignity has supported the expansion, saying that excluding people with mental illness from Canada's assisted dying law is "stigmatising, discriminatory and unconstitutional".

But the law has been criticised by those who worry that it is being offered without safeguards in place for people who are disabled and are living in poverty, and that assisted dying has been easier to access for some than affordable housing.

Some psychiatrists have also expressed concern that Canada's health care system is not ready to handle requests for assisted dying from people with mental disorders, as it is difficult to predict who can recover from a mental illness.

A petition from the Society of Canadian Psychiatry has asked that the expansion be delayed until 2024, though it remains unclear how long the government wants to delay its implementation.

Being able to end the suffering for people without hope either through euthanasia or by preventing them from being born in the first place is a great thing. However if it becomes too arbitrary the public opinion is gonna tank and we will be back to square one. I hope they can put up rules that doesn't turn into a dystopian slippery slope or a total backlash.

The mentally ill are not of sound mind. So how on Earth can they make these decisions?

Not quite the same thing, but there was an episode of Chicago Med where a woman has early onset dementia. Before she became too ill she signed a DNR. But while hospitalized she starts saying she wants to live and is begging her teen daughter to help her. They all convince her that mom doesn't really want to live because her dementia is making her say things. This is a really slippery slope towards Soylent Green levels of dystopia.

It's terrifying to think in the distant future they might "convince" you that assisted suicide is the answer because you don't feel so good today, there aren't enough cheap apartments, there's not enough jobs, food, ect... That's literally Soylent Green. Rather then try to make things better it's cheaper to just kill everyone. They aren't Soylenting the elite. Just the poor dregs who are too sick or too poor to be of use even if they aren't in danger of immediate death from anything terminal. The only thing that's missing is rendering the bodies into food. Waiting for some lunatic to say that's possible and "Here's why eating your grandmother after her medically assisted suicide is a good thing".

Jesus Christ! I had no idea the Leafs were raking themselves that badly. For those unware, the USA has an annual vehicle fatality rate (aka death by car crash) of less than 50k. You would unironically be more likely to die from killing yourself than a car accident. Let alone getting shot, which according to Statista even in the Year of Our Saint 2020 only caused 13,620 one-way trips to the morgue.

Yes, that's right. Taking population into account, ten times more Leafs are raking themselves than are getting shot in the USA by joggers and methheads. Clearly its beyond time for Canada to implement common-sense euthanasia control.
