Text of the Charity Commission press release as it filled me with joy:

Mermaids’ objects are to relieve the mental and emotional stress of children and young people affected by gender identity issues and their families, and to advance public education about the same.

The Commission opened a regulatory compliance case into the charity in September 2022 after safeguarding allegations were raised. It has now formalised its engagement by opening a statutory inquiry, due to newly identified issues about the charity’s governance and management.

The Commission will investigate the regulatory issues to determine whether they indicate serious systemic failing in the charity’s governance and management. The trustees have fully cooperated with the regulator’s case, but their response has not provided the necessary reassurance or satisfied the Commission at this stage.

The regulator will seek to determine whether the charity’s governance is appropriate in relation to the activities the charity carries out, which involve vulnerable children and young people, as well as their families.

The inquiry, which opened on 28 November 2022, will examine:

• The administration, governance and management of the charity by the trustees including its leadership and culture.
• Whether the trustees have complied with and fulfilled their duties and responsibilities as trustees under charity law; in particular whether they had sufficient oversight of the charity’s activities and compliance with its policies and procedures and in line with its charitable objects.
• Whether there has been any misconduct and/or mismanagement by the trustees.

It is the Commission’s policy, after it has concluded an inquiry, to publish a report detailing what issues the inquiry looked at, what actions were undertaken as part of the inquiry and what the outcomes were.

I used to think the HoL was an outdated and antidemocratic institution in need of abolishing but it turns out that having a job for life means Lords members aren’t frightened of their party members/donors the way Commons members seem to be (special mentions for Miriam Cates, Kemi Badenoch and Rosie Duffield for not giving a shit and standing up to the cocks in frocks and their handmaidens and munchiemoms.

Personally I think Mermaids is liable to be much worse, especially in hindsight when we can be honest about child transition, than Kids Company. The truth of the matter there is quite sticky - here’s the Charity Commission inquiry report published in February 2022.

It’s a good, thorough, read. Kids Company was in a precarious financial position for various reasons just at the point when the sex abuse allegations were levelled at them, causing donors to pull out and pushing them over the edge. The police took no further action into the allegations, like with a lot of the people accused of child sex abuse around that time. The comments from the 2021 High Court judgment in particular are interesting. (As an aside, Batmanghelidjh is Iranian by birth, though AFAIK her usual get-up isn’t.)

Mermaids, unfortunately, has been pretty public about wanting to sterilise and castrate vulnerable children, many of them autistic, and many of whom would grow up to be gay. Green made that her, and Mermaids’, crusade despite little evidence in favour and severe ethical concerns. The other revelations, as bad as they are, are IMO relatively minor outgrowths of that central mission.

To give an idea of how significant this is, the charity commission launched a total of 17 inquiry's, and there's not a shortage of dodgy charities in the UK.

I also notice that Mermaids aren't attacking the Times and Telegraph for their reporting any more, mermaids are probably hoping to stay off the print medias radar.

Mermaids is now the subject of an inquiry, and the absolute last thing they want to do is piss off the people who are enquiring. I'm not a barrister or solicitor (nor even a Yank lawyer), but I'd wager a decent sum that Mermaids' counsel told them to STFU and lay low until this blows over.
