Disaster Dog packed off B.C. mountain peak after eating marijuana butt

Miniature Australian Shepherd Jefferson seems fully recovered after his trip.

A B.C. hiker is asking others not to toss the butts of marijuana cigarettes into the woods after his dog ingested an unknown amount of cannabis and had to be packed off a Vancouver Island mountain peak on Saturday.

Ian Ward said he often hikes the trails near Sooke Hills Wilderness Regional Park with his dog Jefferson, a miniature Australian Shepherd who has “a ton of energy.”

But on Saturday, the dog had to be carried off Sugarloaf Mountain after he ate what Ward first thought was a roach, but may have been a larger piece of a marijuana joint.

When Ward and his teen son reached the summit, there were several people enjoying the view and a toke, he said.

“Some, if not all of them, were enjoying cannabis, and I have no criticism of that.”

But the Victoria hiker wants people to understand the risks associated with leaving garbage behind on the trail.

As Ward was having a snack, he noticed Jefferson chewing on something. He pulled the end of a joint out of the dog’s mouth.

“I could tell he’d swallowed a bit,” he said, “but I didn’t really think anything of it.”

The men and their dog headed back down the trail, but after about 10 minutes, Jefferson began to act lethargic. His eyes were glazed over and he stumbled a few times. Eventually, the dog lay on the ground and stopped moving.

Ward, who always carries emergency essentials with him on his hikes, had a Fido Pro sling, a lightweight sling that fits like a backpack and is designed to carry a dog off a trail. He said he has never had to use it before.

The men loaded Jefferson into the sling, and Ward’s son carried the dog for one-and-a-half hours to the trailhead. By the time they reached their car, Jefferson was looking better and had taken some water. Ward reached his vet on the phone and was told to monitor the dog.

“He was really, really lethargic all evening,” he said. “I got up to check on him at night and he seemed to be sleeping fine. The next day, he was back to normal.”

In March, the B.C. SPCA warned dog owners about marijuana after several pet poisonings.

In a news release, the SPCA said marijuana can be lethal for dogs when a large amount is ingested. Reports show that dogs have a larger number of cannabinoid receptors in their brains compared to humans and may be more sensitive to the toxic effects of THC. Smaller dogs are at greatest risk.

Ward said he wanted to share his experience to encourage people not to leave butts behind when hiking.

“I didn’t view it as an issue for dogs before,” he said. “I’d thought of it as a fire hazard and about the litter. I think this is another reason that ‘Pack it in, pack it out’ applies to everything.”

It's Hilarious that people treat the dope smoking faggots like actual faggots or niggers. They are scared to death to say anything about them. "I have no criticism of that". What a cuck faggot.

It's ok. They will eventually turn into heroin addicts and hopefully they OD and some weak faggot doesn't revive them.

Maybe they will get some Chinese fentanyl. LOL

Two things:
One I was mostly joking because I detected what I thought was a hint of sarcasm in your post.
Two this just...this killed it for me:

Also I did a quick ctrl+f of a few of the results and there is no result of 'Trump' so...your vet might just not like the evil orange man and I did not get an easy to access study. The only information seems to be a press packet from a company selling CBD for doggos.

Shepherd breeds are prone to having the MDR1 gene which causes hypersensitivity to a number of substances. They can be accidentally killed by normal veterinary medicines if they have this gene and the vet doesn't adjust the prescription accordingly. eta: fuck potheads

Isn't chocolate verboten for dogs because that tiny bit of caffeine is enough to bust their hearts? Even humans with low blood pressure issues can have bad reactions to THC. Keep Fido out of the stash based on that alone.

Don't leave your drugs around. Don't fucking litter in a park too, jesus. Also pay attention to your dog and don't let him eat random shit off the ground. There's so much simple shit going on here.

When I was a kid I had a small dog that some how got on top of the kitchen table and devoured a tray of brownies with peanuts while we were out and he was fine.

It's the theobromine in chocolate. They can't metabolize it quickly enough and in high quantities it'll poison them.

My vet told me that they were working on a huge study on THC for pain management in older dogs

It's not total bullshit but essentially there's a scramble to find something, anything else instead of opiates for pain. Pot is better than nothing, but imo, serious pain needs serious medicine. Junkies gonna be junkies regardless.

Even then, why are you going to smoke while on a hiking trail? You can't take in nature without the need of nicotine or pot?

No.

never mind dumbass dogs getting them, if someone threw a butt of a doobie on a hiking trail, they're liable to start A FUCKING FOREST FIRE.
Seriously, it's drier than Lindsay Ellis' cooch after interacting with Moviebob out here.

You can't get high just from eating marijuana. It needs to be turned into weed butter first. This dog is a fucking faker!

I'm calling bullshit on this entire thing bc 10 minutes isn't enough time for even alcohol to get into your system. I'm betting this fucker actually let his dog get into something of his own at home prior to the hike.
Its bullshit because its an advertisment disguised as news;

"Ward, who always carries emergency essentials with him on his hikes, had a Fido Pro sling, a lightweight sling that fits like a backpack and is designed to carry a dog off a trail. He said he has never had to use it before."

EDIT: This looks like the same dog as the one in the story

They definitely didn't get the picture in the article "in the field." It looks too clean and professional, and I doubt you would stop and take the pic if your dog was acting weird and was in distress. They probably just used whatever photo they could find from the manufacturer of the sling. (Because this is, indeed, at least partially an advertisement.)

I call bullshit on this. My 13 year old chihuahua ate a whole blunt and could still get around the house just fine, albeit slower than usual.

God dammit I wish I was a stoned border collie hiking in B.C

@KiwiFuzz
There's a huge amount of OTC CBD oils for pets. I use it for pain management in my old arthritic dog and it works really well. He used to wake up whimpering at night but now sleeps like a baby. It's cheaper than vet prescribed stuff too and basically all natural. It's a fish oil tincture.

If someone's been smoking on it already the heat and suction will have pulled a bunch of resin to the back and decarboxylated what plant matter remains, you could totally get high off eating that.

What kind of pothead doesn't take their leftover roach and put it away back in it's plastic container either for packing the leftover weed into something else later, or for proper disposal anyway? Fucking asshole.

Even then, why are you going to smoke while on a hiking trail? You can't take in nature without the need of nicotine or pot?
Yeah, I've seen people outright drop half fucking joints and I'm like: Bruh! Take that shit home and load it into a pipe later, you wasteful dillhole! Enough weed to get a dog the size of an Australian Shepherd this high will give a human a decent head change for sure.

As you said, these things usually come in plastic tubes, perfect sealed storage for the remains of the joint.

It's the temperature, I think. You have to heat it up and dissolve it into fat or burn it to get it to turn into properly psychoactive substances. Just eating a handful of leaves doesn't do much.
Actually, dogs are pretty good at metabolizing pot. How do I know? When I was a teenager my family owned a yellow lab. She was a sweet dog, but dumb as fuck and loved to get intoxicated. How do I know she loved to get intoxicated?
You couldn't leave pot or beer around this dog. She loved both. She'd knock your beer over and slurp it up, then start acting goofy. If she found your pot she would intentionally eat it, then start acting goofy AND lazy as fuck.

Turns out dogs are quite a bit like us in the "let's poison our brains in fun ways!" department.
