The Dallas PD "claimed" that she probably ran off and did not investigate the case at all until McGee reached out for help. The story "died" after GG started #FindMercy and I think it forced Dallas PD to get involved, and GG entered the "waiting for new information" phase.

It's come up again because McGee tweeted earlier today that foul play was now suspected.

Most missing person cases are just a matter of someone deciding to take off and not tell anyone where they're going, and it's really hard to find someone who doesn't want to be found without trampling all over civil liberties, so most cops don't bother. My guess is that the initial detectives thought she ran away from home or something and decided to dump the case. Now that they're being pressured to look, new detectives have been put on and they're seeing the case in a different light.
If foul play really is involved, heads deserve to roll for this.
