I don’t think it’s an actual accent, I think it’s a voice he puts on to make himself seem palatable while he’s treating severely disabled children like playthings.

Wrasslin is very popular among men in DD/MR programs.
A bunch of college guys working in a Medicaid MR/DD waiver program in my college town got in hot water for basically allowing wrasslin night in the MR/DD group home. All the residents (men ages 18-40) were obsessed with pro-wrestling and constantly acted out stuff or imitated wrestlers. The protocol was to stop them and redirect but the entire evening shift became 19-24 year old guys who decided they should let them have their fun and would turn the living room into the ring and have Wrestlemania Wed.
It was actually pretty cool because the clients were perfect angels during the week so they could participate in much anticipated, but secret, Wrestlemania.
Went on for a few weeks but the weed smoking by the staff to get hype to watch Wrestlemania (and inviting some non-staff audience) got it busted. The group home members were gutted when it was stopped.
It’s a shame we don’t have something like the Japanese Dogleg wrestling here. I mean special Olympics is great but not for pent up aggression. Just like most other humans DD/MR people need a way to vent their frustration and some theatrical insults, pile drivers and suplexes on their fellow man seem scratch that itch.

I was reading a bit back (as in, first few pages) and I saw it mentioned that severely disabled students will get handed high school diplomas just for showing up. How do you all feel about that?
High school was rough for me for many blogposty reasons, but one thing that always annoyed me was that kids that could not communicate in any way and would never be able to work a job (not even an aformetioned incompetent grocery store bagger) could get a diploma, but I couldn't just because I struggled in a single subject and attendance. Why the hell should you be awarded what is essentially your ticket to minimum wage work for just showing up? The parents just send them because it's free, government mandated daycare+physiotherapy+attention until they're 18.

Some disabled people are allowed to go to school until they are 21 (most of them basically do life-skills training; I have a relative who is doing that right now) and if they aren't capable of doing any kind of mainstream schoolwork, even in classes like art or gym, they get a certificate of completion instead of a diploma. I heard recently that in some states, they may even be able to go longer; Michigan allows people with profound disabilities to participate in programs through age 26.
As for the wrestling fiasco, it sounds to me that the issue was the staff smoking weed on the job, and bringing in their friends to watch. Yeah, what could possibly go wrong with that?

Ha! That post reminds me of someone I dated a bit after high school, they worked as an assistant/carer for folks with fair to middlin' mental impairments. The clients at the group home loved to dance to "hip hop" and at one of their friday night "dances," someone (supposedly accidentally but I don't know) played the original version of "Let's Get Retarded" by Black Eyed Peas... the staff had to let it keep going so as not to clue the clients into how bad it was but if I hadn't heard it first hand, I'd think it was some incredibly cringe scene from a movie.

If you consistently find yourself in positions where the SPED kids are being picked over you for minimum wage work, their diploma isn’t the issue.

In my state they give them a ‘certificate of completion’. It’s not a real diploma.
Also, a true tater can’t do any job, although if part of your struggles with school was the showing up to class part, I’m not sure how long you’d last at a job either, since ‘being there’ is a key part of not getting fired.

As others have said, they don't get diplomas, they get a certificate of attendance, or some variant, that basically says they attended high school (usually until they age out well past 18 ). It's not equivalent to a diploma or a GED, it's just a feel-good thing. After that they usually transition into full time adult day programs, if the family/guardians are smart. Otherwise they sit around the house all day and that's when you get people like Chris Chan.

To be clear the staff was smoking weed, not the downies/clients. The temptation for staff to get really baked before watching the guys go all Hulk Hogan was too great. Pretty sure weed was how Wrestlemania got green lit by staff to begin with.
Wrestling was the #1 TV viewing choice by the patients by miles, they watched hours of it every week and wanted to act it out moves as they watched it.
The fact that staff was young adult men made the very sympathetic to the DD young men they supervised. They understood only too well their desire to wrassle and look at big titties. They had to send in older adult staff members to reign in that group house. The issue with uh, self pleasure, was why the staff became all young adult men to begin with. Let’s just say having female staff members were considered a big bonus for the chronic masturbators in the house, so had started male only staff in that house as a result

I'm fine with this. They put in the time and completed their curriculum with modifications. It doesn't hurt me to give them the same diploma I got.
My friend's sister (the one who was not retarded, just had DS, asshole) was very high functioning and sometimes her social fluency coupled with relatively poor judgement got her into awkward situations. I once witnessed the following conversation:
Sister: Hey you guys. I got weed. You wanna smoke up with me?
Friend: Where did you get weed?
Sister: I bought it! From Amanda!
Friend: Who the fuck is Amanda?
Sister: (completely exasperated) My caseworker, idiot!

I have zero problem with sped kids getting their diploma equivalents. Not that I'm from the US, but who gives a shit? It's not the same thing as an actual diploma.
D-Generation X kid sounds amazing, as does sped Wrestlemania. I would love to volunteer taking disabled adults to see wrestling or something. Considering how everyone marks the fuck out here whenever WWE rolls into town they'd be doing exactly what every other adult in the building was doing and losing their shit in a socially acceptable situation.

Kids with a 3.49 (meaning no special honor designations) could say the same about kids with a 2.0 ("I busted my ass and missed cum laude by 0.01 because x, and they barely got by/showed up...it's not fair we have the same diploma"), but them's the breaks.
It may be that you should ideally have received some additional attention/leeway/make-up opportunity/etc.
Side education system note - Not sure when you were in school or what kind of resources your school had, but the difference in accommodation and support levels/options (both more and less challenging than the average) between now and the middle ages when I was in high school is astonishing. Observationally, it seems to help elevate the highest- and the lowest-achieving (academically speaking) kids the most, whereas the low-average to marginally high kids are more likely to be left to sink or swim on their own, regardless of their individual challenges (like trouble with one particular subject or valid reasons for attendance issues or any number of things).
