🐱 Warner Bros. Discovery Thinks Fandom/HBO Max Is for the Boys

Few things get my blood boiling in the way that labeling fandom or “nerdy” things with a gender does. On one hand, it erases the non-binary fans of things, and on the other hand, it is an outdated way of looking at nerddom. Men were often the ones labeled as fans of things like Star Wars and comics despite it continually being proven untrue, but it seems as if the outdated views have continued on with the merger for Warner Bros. Discovery.

At the Warner Bros. Discovery Second Quarter 2022 Earnings Call that happened on August 4, they showed some slides of their hopes for the future, their “adjustments” (including the shelving of Batgirl) and then they showed what both HBO Max and Discovery+ coming together into one platform means for them as a company.

While they could have simply focused on their content and how it varies between genres and programming, they decided to take it one step further by saying that HBO Max has a “male skew” and that it is the “Home of ‘Fandoms'” vs. Discovery+’s “female skew” while being the “Home of ‘Genredoms.'”

You know, HBO Max is for the boys only.

How do you even track that data?

Sure, there might be some sort of data that gives them an idea of who’s watching what on the platform, but outside of that, my gender is not attached to my profile on our HBO Max account. How would they know who is watching it from my profile? Or does it just connect back to the name of the person paying for it? Because if that’s the case, then your data is flawed right out the gate.

And again, labeling it this way is also erasing non-binary fans in the conversation. Are they just not on their radar? Or does their data just connect to what someone making a PowerPoint thought was the case?

Smells like sexism

The problem with this way of thinking is that the HBO Max bullet points go on to label the platform as more “scripted” shows and that they are “lean in” programs, vs. the Discovery+ content, which is reality television and “comfort viewing,” so, boiled down, it comes across as saying that men love to think with their television and women do not.

It feels like something some older executive would say in a meeting in some comedy show about how television is made, and we’d all laugh at how blatantly sexist he is.

Again, sure, maybe they have some kind of data behind it, but the minute you start to think about it past just “Whose name is on the service?” then you slowly start to realize that this is nearly impossible to track. So, it seems more likely that they got this idea based on the “content” that is on the streaming platform and that makes the sexist nature of this slide even worse.

It’s a childish labeling of the love of “fandom,” and it’s outdated. On top of that, it just doesn’t feel like there’s any truth to this? Is this because they think that men are more likely to watch superhero shows? What is this? 1955????

I love when these people cry and scream about how streaming platforms are managed. They have the data right there, fuckos. They didn't pull it out of their ass that HBO Max is predominantly viewed by men.

Someone needs to tell this writer that Warner Bros. calling HBO Max male-skewed doesn't mean that women AREN'T ALLOWED to watch HBO Max, because that's just about the only thing I can think of that could inspire this much screeching.

Also, on "what about the non-bxnarxes"- those people are 1% of 1%, and all of them are mentally ill. They aren't skewing ANYTHING.

"I want to break gender norms as a proud independent womyn, but I also never want to see data suggesting that such norms even exist."

Nobody really cares what a bunch of marketing consultants say to get the suits excited. Watch whatever you want. It's as easy as using your eyes. In fact, screw these streaming services and just pirate stuff.

Seriously? You're just too retarded for me to care to keep reading your drivel.

Retard, they know everything about you. They have for years. You've been handing over data willingly, without question, since you were a teenager.

It's not limited to HBO Max data. They'll buy data-sets from third party data brokers, and match it against your user profile. That credit card you use to pay for HBO Max? They'll match it up against your Amazon purchases, the takeout you get delivered, your commuting habits, your phone use - all of it.

Non-binaries "aren't on the radar" because that reflects reality. Pretending for a second that non-binary is actually a thing (it isn't) it's demonstrably true that as a group, they have zero buying power. Sure, they might throw out a few low-budget virtue-signalling projects for PR reasons - but you're not where the profits are.

MATI or whatever, but the broken logic of these people is infuriating.

They lost me at "Discovery+ not scripted". Have they even seen a reality show?

Men built this castle, you feckless harlot. Either pay proper respect or leave. I'm tired of women co-opting spaces that men built then showing zero respect for the ones that created the space.

Zaslav sounds fairly sane about what he's doing. Doesn't see a point in financing big budget movies that just go to streaming and doesn't want to damage the brand with mediocre stuff like the Batgirl movie. I'd also like to think him tossing the Seth Rogen movie off as a sign he doesn't care about appealing to these celebrities and their shit projects the way places like Netflix do.

During the presentation, Zaslav repeatedly pointed to the company’s DC superhero properties — including Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman — as central to the company’s broader content strategy. To better marshal those properties, Zaslav cited his previously reported goal of putting together a team with a “10-year plan focusing just on DC,” similar to the approach Disney has taken with Marvel Studios, as run by Kevin Feige. But he did not announce who would be heading that team.

“These are brands that are known everywhere in the world,” he said of the DC characters. “And as part of that, we’re going to focus on quality. DC is something that we think we could make better and we’re focused on it now.”

Zaslav mentioned “quality” repeatedly when discussing DC, strongly implying that “Batgirl” was not up to a standard that he believes is necessary for adaptations of the wider comic book property. “The objective is to grow the DC brand, to grow the DC characters,” he said. “But also, our job is to protect the DC brand. And that’s what we’re going to do.”
“We will fully embrace theatrical as we believe that creates interest and demand, provides a great marketing tailwind, and generates word-of-mouth buzz as films transition to streaming and beyond,” Zaslav said. “We have a different view on the wisdom of releasing direct streaming films, and we have taken some aggressive steps to course correct the previous strategy.”

Women were the ones writing all the twisted fan fiction about Spock getting raped by Tetris blocks. I don't think a man could imagine such depravity.

Man, remember when Discovery used to be about cool shit?
I remember. It went to shit around the time they decided to branch out to God knows how many channels (Discovery Travel, Discovery Home & Health, ID Discovery, etc.) and tried their hand at modern marketing for Gen-Y and millenials. Boom-de-yada, boom-de-yada...

Men and Women like different things. Simple as.
Men can have pussies too or at least can act like one.

That’s true. Do they own the history channel too? I’m a fan of documentaries and I disliked how the history channel slowly went from that to aliens, big foot, and pawn shops.
Warner Bros is quickly becoming the most toxic, problematic media company in America and I’m starting to love them for it.
I’m surprised. Must be the new management. That or the merger was pricey as hell and now they need to make up for lost revenue.

It's women's fault for having shit taste in movies. Who would have thought that having shit taste in media and demanding all media to pander to that shit taste would cause them to lose money?
