Every year around the Fourth of July, the number of firework related injuries spike, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

There were nine reported deaths and an estimated 11,500 in relation to fireworks injuries in the U.S. last year.

There were about 15,600 more firework injuries reported the year prior, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The CPSC said the high number could have been due to firework shows being cancelled amid concerns about group gatherings.

Of the nine deaths in 2021, six were due to firework misuse and another to a mortar launch malfunction. Two others are unknown.

Adults between the ages 20 to 24 were reported to have the highest rate of firework related injuries in 2021. The most reported bodily injuries were hands and fingers - other injuries are commonly burns.

The parents left an 11 year old unsupervised with fireworks? Roman candles and firecrackers, sure, but those won't split your skull.
Plenty of idiots shoot roman candles at each other, completely oblivious as to what kind of damage they do if they actually hit you. I saw a 20 year old get dragged into the ER last canada day that had been hit in the chest directly by a roman candle and it melted his flesh and shirt together and looked fucking horrifying

One of the kids probably brought a shell with them.
I remember when I was finally deemed old enough to light the fireworks myself, I received a stern talking to before I could.
"These are bombs. They're wrapped in pretty paper, and they look pretty in the air, but they are bombs, and they can kill you. Never light one if it's not being used the right way."
Does that mean I was always the most responsible with my fireworks? Well, no. But I never popped my noggin with a 5" canister, either. It's a conversation a lot of parents don't have, because a lot of parents figure if it were really dangerous, you wouldn't be able to buy it. And that's partially true: You need an ATF license to buy the fireworks that'll turn a kid into pink mist, but all fireworks are dangerous.

A Roman Candle isn't going to blow your brains out. Kid must have put a M-80 in his mouth or something equally as retarded.

The closest I ever got to calamity was when at about 13 I took the red plastic nose cone off a fairly sizable rocket firework. Dunno why. I never got it to seat right, so I left it on crooked. Figured it wouldn't matter. Instead of going straight up it climbed like 30ft and then started pulling these incredibly tight loops, spiralling all over out of control. Thankfully it exploded (15ft off the ground) before it got too close to the house. Best firework I've ever lit, tbh. But it could have been the adrenaline.

Sparkletor 2.0: pretending the m80 is a cigar

An 11 yo should NEVER NEVER NEVER be allowed to light off his own fireworks. PERIOD! At that age they have zero idea of what a firework can do if it is handled improperly. In Califagnia legal fireworks are called "safe and sane" which like so much here is a fucking cruel joke since they can still fuck you up if mishandled. And then you get into the shit that everybody seems to want like cherry bombs and M80's and bottle rockets. Fireworks can fucking kill you. If you are too young to realize that (and every 11 yo is) you should NOT be allowed to light them off. I'm sorry this woman had to learn the hard way.

What do you guys think happened? My personal theory is he lit a mortar that took longer than he'd expect to cook off so he looked down the tube.
A youtube clip from the local news station I just ran across while looking for more info, the autopsy apparently said the cause of death was trauma to the head from a shell, so you're probably right. The mom said it was a "fireworks malfunction" but I've handled enough fireworks to know a shell's not hitting you in the head unless you're over the mortar or lighting it outside of one.
Well, sometimes the launch charge gets it out but the actual aerial doesn't detonate, so you can get smacked by a lump of dud fireworks on the way down, but that's very uncommon.

This will turn into a go-fund-me or lawsuit scam. When you pump out "tweets" that quickly it shows the second thing that crossed her mind is "how do I profit from this".

I don't know how successful a lawsuit would be. Fireworks companies have their boxes basically be half-label now. They've changed consumer grade fireworks to the point that you can load them upside down and it'll still launch properly because of lawsuits from that. A gofundme might get some money, but I'm pressing X on her getting any money out of a fireworks manufacturer (most of which are foreign anyway).

Yeah, the malfunction is that the parents let a dumb kid fuck around and find out.

We used to (still do) have strict fireworks rules even for the pyromaniacs in the family. Once the fuse was lit, “fire in the hole” (actually said) and we stood back.

Usually fireworks injuries involve blindness or missing fingers, how do you break your skull?

Wonder if the kid accidentally hit himself with a roman candle, white trash parents got pissed, beat him to death, and popped some black cats on his head as an alibi. Who posts a reaction like this on social media? I would be too distraught to even breathe.
