I think you might have actually cracked it.

Anime characters get a pass because there's a level of detail that limits what they can do. Trying to draw an open mouth and teeth on the character on the left would simply look too busy compared to how damn simplified everything else is. But humans smile with their mouths open to some level, just the action of pulling up the corners of the mouth exposes the upper front teeth. So trying to smile with a mouth closed looks incredibly artificial unless the eyes are going along with it.

It's a shame that they always manage to never learn from this kind of thing. Like, honesty from strangers can be valuable! If I thought that say, I had an amazing goth makeup look going on, and then a random person asked me if I was cosplaying Uncle Fester, I would consider whether maybe my makeup wasn't that great after all. Not that I'd necessarily change what I was doing (maybe I love wearing terrible goth makeup so much I don't mind looking like Uncle Fester), but I would accept that I was probably not making the impression that I thought I was, as painful as that realization might be.
