I’ll add, as a woman that rarely wears makeup, that in most western adult society (businesses, doctors offices, etc) it’s a sign of having your shit together. It’s more about establishing a place you’re comfortable with. Maybe comparison would be a better word than competition most of the time. It’s not “I want to get a better job/man than that bitch so I’m going to wear lipstick” it’s “I want to be perceived as fitting into this social group and being worthy of that status, and the other women are more likely to accept me if I look like I have my shit together, which in many cases includes makeup.” Except this is done mostly unconsciously.

This is one reason transwomen have so much trouble understanding their own status in a group, and can’t grasp what women really think about them.
