When you go back to Seven Seas and the manga they trooned out, it just baffles me that obscure manga/LNs like that are getting localized in the first place. Let's compare it with Midara na Ao-chan wa Benkyou ga Dekinai!, a manga that was popular enough in Japan to get an anime adaptation, albeit one that failed the Manabi Line pretty hard and fell into obscurity. MAL has about 5,000 people globally who have read or are reading it. Of that number you have to figure a lot are scans because of how prohibitively expensive buying manga is. So of that number we have to estimate Americans + bought the official copy. You have to figure it's sold about 1-2k at the most copies over 7 years, which...isn't great. And this, like I said, was a manga that was popular to get an anime made out of it.
Now, we move on to the hapless trap manga that SS trooned out. It's a niche genre in the first place and hasn't been out for very long, so I'm predicting it's doing pretty bad numbers. Who was this series even picked up for in the first place? Just to please the tranny jannies at ANN?
The localization bubble has to burst at some point because paying for official English translations of manga that aren't even that popular in their home country and the labor just isn't sustainable. Is this like a Yen Press situation where they're making so much money off of SAO and Re:Zero that they can afford to take losses on everything else? I don't think SS has a series that prints money like that. Regardless, I'm just waiting for the bottom to fall out of the localization industry.

This already happened right around 2008, only with regular manga. Ass News Network will spin it all they want, but the physical manga market went kaput because the rise of high speed multi gigabyte internet into public infrastructure along with the boom in internet media entertainment absolutely steamrolled over overspectulated marked up hunches and the fact that they did not understand the usual anime fan's budget and what they want.
I have to say it, because even as a fan who loves obscure series myself, the anime market is a totally different animal in the business jungle, and so far, there are two different beasts that have acclimated and evolved to adapt on each side of the globe. ANN and Seven Seas thinks they can domesticate and tame the beast in their immediate vicinity without knowing anything about it.

This brings up something that has confounded some people: Why do certain people in the fandom/industry shill for it so much?
There's actually a history to this so allow me to explain: During the late 2000s/early 2010s there was a decline of quality in the anime coming out every season and a lot of people blamed it on the lack of dvd sales/buying of official releases because fans were either fansubbing or pirating. Now of course the reality of why this all happened had more to do with the economic issues of the time. These two convention panels dating back to 2007 and 2008 done by Greg Ayres gives you an idea of how this was approached, Greg was actually known for doing these back in the day:

This mentality became so commonplace amongst people in the industry that even with the advent of streaming services like Crunchyroll it still stays. In fact, that's probably how Funimation became such a clique to begin, because it was a response to what was going on in the industry at that time.

Money, my man, money, plain and simple.
Outside of plain barely disguised greed.... hahaha, what am I saying, it is greed. I do have doubts on my own cynicism, but greed is the all permeating core of this entire debacle. Nothing against the Ayers family, but they cannot tell me that if one isn't reeling from licensing fees, that they weren't reeling from how Blackrock crashed the world economy for their own pockets in 2008. That fucked over everyone. If you're still aimed on making big money in the middle of the world losing their nesteggs and small upstart businesses because some hedge fund assholes decided to cash out on shifty business practices and blame everyone else for the reasons why you're not making it big, you're just fucking stupid.
Also, I also blame major shortsightedness of the liscensors and major figure heads of anime fandom of the day as well. After all, it's why Anime News Network has a thread and why we're in it. I can rightfully say that the lot of them thought they were going to experience lightning striking twice as with the anime boom of the 1990s and early 2000s. About as much as I view that time in awe and reverence, and wouldn't mind such a time coming again, deeper down, you have to be realistic- There's a reason why such a thing will happen exactly as it did then, and about as much as history rhymes, it will come back much different than before when it does repeat. Ass News Network may deny this with wanting to make articles on shitting on older anime now, which would have their younger selves go apeshit and deny them their entire existence with self termination, but they are so much more nostalgia wallowing than anyone outside of their mud pen. Plus, both them and the liscensees thought that Japan would keep pumping titles for their bottom line. Ask anyone from the Japan Bubble Economy of the 80s how their careers worked out when it crashed in 1991.
If you want to ask me, this is the result of an industry that is solely reliant on trade than production, and in this case, the sole trade and localization of some of the world's most prominent quality entertainment. If you ask any history buff, they will tell you that trade organizations are among the bottom feeders of mankind, along with economy manipulating salami slicers, warmongers, drug dealers, slavers, cannibals, pedophiles, and bandits. Because these fuckers don't have a creative or working bone in their deadbeat bodies, they will force production than actually engage in it. It's every reason why I mock Anime News Network and every likeminded oldfag who used the Great Recession to bitch and whine about how "anime isn't what we were used to in our day". There is little love going on here.

It got so bad for one nation that they elected a radical man with a toothbrush mustache who believed in both socialism and nationalism to their government who in turn started a war that became the deadliest conflict in human history and the ruination afterwards was so bad that the toothbrush mustache now bears the name of that dictator instead because of how deeply people associate it with him.

Zack Davisson translated Devilman and is part of the same clique. For awhile there while Devilman Crybaby was really big Devilman got put into the "safe" category, which is likely why it and Cutie Honey got released then and we haven't had anymore since. What's an acceptable series to these types or not is completely irrational. It's how you have Devilman fans who hate Nagai and Maid Dragon fans who want it censored all over. I can hardly wrap my head around it.

The fact that these people rewrite content because they view it as offensive is a sign of how inept they are at their jobs. Yaoi and yuri stories also have characters that are downright repugnant rapists, but those get a pass since they aren't straight. As for Seven Seas, they do focus on obscure series and ecchi titles and that makes no sense business-wise in toning down its content. Slight PL: I do some translation for my job and the author always has final call and usually reviews it before approval. I wonder if they even bother letting the authors or publishers know what they're doing or if they justify the changes for western audiences as an excuse to censor content they don't like.

He's a huge piece of shit that admits to gatekeeping what comes over here and what doesn't. Hence the glut of faggot shit. I can't prove it, but I strongly suspect his mail-order Japanese wife is heavily assisting him in his translations. He comes off on really stupid on Twitter, like another Zac Bertschy.
He's also had an entire page removed from Ghost in the Shell and heavily censored the rest of the scene. Then he lied about it and said Masume Shirow told them to do it because he was embarrassed of it. Even though the page is still printed in Japan and was later printed in the US by a different company.
I'd love to know how Toren Smith died. It was completely hushed up when it happened.
That reminds me of seeing a conspiracy theory on /m/ that Shirow died in an earthquake and has had a ghostwriter/artist under his name since, which is why the majority of his work for awhile has been porn. They put a lot of effort into denying the fact that Shirow is a massive pervert.
