Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
A dark & nihilistic blend of melancholic Post-Punk, with the dreamy soundscape of Shoegaze, the slow build up & atmosphere of Post-Rock, & the dark abrasiveness of Post-Industrial.
This album sounds like the audio equivalent of having an oddly beautiful & psychedelic dream that is also a nightmare that digs beneath the skin into your soul.
TALKING HEADS - (Everything from ‘77 to Speaking in Tongues)
I like it for how seamlessly it blends danceable & accessible Funk Rock with Art Punk & Post-Punk without sounding like a mess of unfinished half-baked ideas.
TOOL - ÆNIMA
Okay yeah their fans suck ass & they do overhype the band abit, but fuck, I cannot deny this second album by them is an album I replay so many times.
Being a fan of Prog & Alternative, I love how they combine the technical complexity of Progressive Metal with the darkness & aggression of 90s Alternative Metal, it creates an atmosphere that no other band has managed to replicate for me, & for that this album still is a favorite of mine.
NAPALM DEATH - SCUM
To prevent this post from becoming an egocentric echo chamber of music commonly liked by pretentious assholes from /mu/, I’ll throw in some basic shit.
Grindcore is fun, it takes the best elements of Hardcore Punk, that being the sheer aggression with a “no fucks given” attitude, more focused on letting out rage than making impressive music, & upgrading it with some Extreme Metal flair to add that much needed heaviness to all that pent up anger.
This album is the perfect example of this style & will remain a personal favorite alongside the band Pig Destroyer.
OUR LADY PEACE - Happiness… Is Not a Fish That You Can Buy
Post-Grunge is a relatively shit genre with only a few genuine gems, but one band that used to consistently pump out really good albums & actually push the genre beyond Butt-chugging riffs & Yarling was Our Lady Peace.
The tunes they put out actually manage to sound different from eachother compared to most Post-Grunge bands where most songs blend together, their lyrics are pretty nuanced going beyond the usual “I’m a sad junkie.” or “I hate my Ex.” that Post-Grunge is known for, & their singer has a unique voice that on paper sounds annoying, but in practice is actually very pleasant to hear.
J DILLA - DONUTS
I find the Lo-Fi Hip Hop beats streams on YouTube overhyped, DONUTS by J DILLA is one of the best pieces of Instrumental Hip Hop/Plunderphonics put out, one of my most fond memories of the album being listening to the CD in a car with my family one peaceful December as it snowed outside.
The samples of old Soul songs remixed with relaxing beats provided an odd sense of warped nostalgia among the relaxing urban atmosphere it induced.
SYSTEM OF A DOWN - TOXICITY
Honestly, what more do I need to say?
It’s SOAD, an already well regarded Alternative Metal band, & one of the few moments of Nu-Metal showing it’s potential to being something worth giving a shit about.
The band is so good, it made very heavy & aggressive Metal music that was pretty abstract sounding in both lyricism & occasional experimentation mainstream.
& it serves as an oddly nostalgic time capsule of the political tension of the Bush Administration & Post-9/11 Paranoia.
Johnny Cash - American (album series)
Johnny Cash made plenty of amazing Country in his early days, but his peak to me remains his American album series from American Recordings to American VI: Ain’t No Grave.
But these albums are not easy listens even for somebody who has bared through some very mentally taxing depressive albums, & it is mostly due to how these albums feel like an open obituary made for a man who is still alive written by himself, this isn’t reflected more accurately than in his cover of Hurt, where the song alludes to how he acknowledges he is going to die soon, but has come to terms with it among with reconciling with his past regrets.
It isn’t too different than what Johnny has done before, but it does take on a more Americana style compared to his Traditional Country albums, embracing a more honest & dark atmosphere compared to his earlier works which while occasionally dark in the likes of Folsom Prison Blues, was mostly lighthearted & even occasionally featured an innocent Country Gospel track.
BOLT THROWER - Those Once Loyal
Sabaton is sucks dick, their singer sounds like he sucks dick, & their guitarist sounds like he sucks dick.
BOLT THROWER however doesn’t, they kick a lot of ass with their bombastic War-themed Death Metal.
Any of their albums are basically the audio equivalent of the death, destruction, misery, & brutality of War all contained into one CD for your sadistic listening pleasure.
Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
Selected Ambient Works for amazing as it is didn’t make the cut, while that fantastic blend of IDM & Ambient Techno was very pleasing to the ears, I am personally biased & am drawn more towards the more aggressive style of Drill & Bass, this the album RDJ satisfies that urge for snappy chaotic & fast beats.
Perfect for Racing Sim Games atleast in my opinion, save Selected Ambient Works for book reading or studying though.
311 - From Chaos
To again balance out the /mucore hipster shit, here is something less hipstery.
There was a small scene of Reggae Rock or atleast Reggae influenced Rock around the 90s & early 2000s, that some have also nicknamed White Boy Reggae, the one band that has aged the best from this scene is would be 311.
311 brings the best of both worlds in their albums, they sometimes have a energetic & fun to listen to Reggae-influenced Rap Rock/Funk Rock track that goes hard, but then mellow out abit into some more relaxed Reggae Rock.
Their lyrics aren’t anything to ride home about, but fuck their Guitar & Drums are so satisfying to listen to, & the singer is relatively tolerable atleast in my opinion, some may hate him & think he sounds like Fred Durst, but I disagree, he has a smooth flow about him with a laid back singing voice that makes 311 the best out of the whole Rap Rock/Rap Metal whatever thing that happened.
IRON MAIDEN - Somewhere in Time
Some may call it sacrilege I didn’t put Powerslave or Piece of Mind as a favorite, but too bad assholes, this album fucks, & I am a Sci-Fi faggot so the whole Cyberpunk theme makes me up the score on it.
But not only that, this album took on some more Progressive notes, which added a lot to the already great sound of IRON MAIDEN.
The certain guitar sound of IM is a sound that never ceases to feel like candy to my ears, & for Traditional Heavy Metal clean-singing with more melodic vocals instead of aggression, Bruce Dickinson never fails in that camp, he even remains my favorite in this style of Metal singing.
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine
This was a hard call as honestly every TDEP album is my favorite album, but this one in particular hits a certain vibe, Calculating Infinity is easily their heaviest & most chaotic album, & later on while they did definitely keep the same chaos & heaviness, they did slightly mellow out a little.
Miss Machine though feels like a perfect balance of both worlds, it combines that satisfying heavy as fuck edge of Calculating Infinity with the well earned occasional melody of their later work.
Between The Buried & Me - COLORS
An album that is basically one song.
But one song that is an absolute fucking spectacle.
Beginning with an epic Piano Rock ballad that blends into some Progressive Metal, & just goes off from there into some complex, experimental, & beautiful sections that range from soaring Technical Death Metal, to short stints of Acoustic Rock & even Bluegrass for a very short period, but still keeps up the Extreme Prog Metal energy without pussying out.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯A♯∞
My first Post-Rock album that I fully listened to fairly recently, & it became my favorite.
This band lives up to the hype that people give out.
It was a choice for music while walking out into the country side fields during cold cloudy days, & it fit so well hearing the Ambience driven guitar that evoked a cold melancholic atmosphere, & even the abstract Spoken Word moments with Political connotations were not only fascinating to listen to, but aided in adding context to the Dystopian vibes the album was trying to push.
Of course, I don’t want this to be all about me, I want to hear your favorite albums & why you love them personally, I’m always looking for new music to give me a broader horizon to look upon.

I agree with '77 to SiT being their best, but I'd be lying if I said True Stories wasn't a guilty pleasure. I liked the movie, too.
