New Build, New Video (A)
TL;DR: It's a fucking chat interaction feature.
EDIT: That was fast! The problems that are described in the video below have already been solved. Read this blog post to learn about the current state of the chat interaction feature!

Early in the game’s development, I frequently set milestone goals for myself. My goals were always the same: to include a new major feature in the game by the 1st or 15th day of every month. I stuck to this system for a long time, until it became impossible (because my tasks became very complex and required more than 2 weeks of work to complete).

At this point in time, I am focusing on fixing bugs, removing exploits, balancing gameplay, and making improvements/additions to the game based on user feedback, rather than hitting specific milestone goals. But, with that said, I still feel guilty and apologetic whenever we reach the 1st or 15th day of the month, and I don’t have a new “major feature” to show off.

In the final days of May, I worked on a feature that I was really excited about – something that I had been dreaming of including in the game for many years. It looked like it was going to be finished by June 1st, too. This made me so excited! It was going to be just like the good old days, back when every build had a “star attraction”, a major feature that people could get excited about.

I added the feature to the game, tested it, confirmed that it functioned exactly as I imagined it…but then, I ran into a problem. A problem that I can’t solve my own; a problem that I’d need another programmer’s assistance to fix.

Ah! So disappointing! It really hurts to be on the verge of releasing something really exciting, and then have to postpone it until I find someone to help me fix a problem that is outside my area of expertise…

Working on that feature and not being able to release it makes me feel like I’m coming to you “empty-handed” today; coming to you with no proof that I’ve been spending my time working on something cool and exciting for you to enjoy. I don’t want that to be the case, so I decided to record a video showing you the progress I made with this feature, even if it’s not ready to be used just yet.

…however, it’s kind of awkward to make a video announcing that I don’t have a cool new feature to reveal, so I don’t want to upload this video to my main channel. Instead, I’ve uploaded it to my secondary channel. Here, take a look:

Aside from that, today’s build also contains a bunch of improvements and bug fixes! Click “Continue Reading” to see a list.

  • The player is no longer able to send a stink bomb to the guidance counselor’s office or Info-chan’s room. (The guidance counselor is too professional to abandon her duties because of a bad smell, and Info-chan has hacked the ventilation system and made it impossible to send any gases into her room. She did this for a specific reason, but it will be one of the last things you ever learn about the game’s lore.)
  • The player is no longer allowed to take off a swimsuit that was splattered with blood until they have showered and removed the blood on it, because the act of doing so could result in the player entering a state where they are “soft-locked” and trapped within the locker room, unable to exit because there is no clean clothing they can put on.
  • Using the ventilation system to send a bad smell into the Headmaster’s office will cause him to leave school and not come back until after lunchtime has ended. (If you send a bad smell into his office after lunchtime, he’ll go home for the rest of the day.)
  • From now on, when students are walking around the school and collecting trash bags to throw away, males will not enter female bathrooms to search for trash bags, and females will not enter male bathrooms to search for trash bags.
  • The ventilation system is now accessed by using the B button instead of the A button, since using the A button could cause the player to accidentally throw a stink bomb instead of accessing the ventilation system.
  • The player is now allowed to kill students while wearing a swimsuit even if there are no clean outfits at school to change into, since blood can always be cleaned off of a swimsuit without disposing of it.
  • Updated the hair model of the foreign boy in the 1980s Mode student council to look less basic/generic and more like the “dreamy foreign boy” character he is supposed to represent.
  • Tweaked the 1989 “Pool’s Closed” artwork to more accurately reflect the student council president’s hairstyle.
  • Several male hair models have been replaced. If you don’t like them, you are welcome to model your own versions and show me screenshots. If I like your models better than the ones in the game, I’ll consider replacing the current models with your models.
  • Fixed bug that would trick the game into thinking that there were bloody weapons present on school grounds even though the player had incinerated all bloody weapons, if the player dismembered a corpse with a circular saw that was not bloody before the dismemberment animation began.
  • Fixed bug that would cause a faculty member to slide across the ground instead of perform their walking animation if they were distracted by a radio after having sent the player to the guidance counselor earlier in the day.
  • Fixed bug that caused the game to permanently mark a save file as being in the Alphabet Killer Challenge if the player activated the challenge and then exited it using the pause screen “return to title screen” feature.
  • Fixed bug that caused the “low-sanity chromatic abberation” effect to remain onscreen when the player returned home from school if the player didn’t restore their lost sanity before ending the day.
  • Fixed bug that prevented the Martial Arts Club from going about their daily routine if the player enabled the “Disable Distance Animations” feature and then never walked anywhere near the MA Club.
  • Fixed bug that would cause student council members to stop acknowledging some of the player’s behavior if they were distracted by the player while returning a dropped object where it belonged.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the “Raibaru counters Ayano’s attack and snaps Ayano’s arm” animation to play without sound if the player rapidly attacked Raibaru immediately after killing Osana.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the game to incorrectly remember the number of bloody uniforms at school when reloading a save that was made while the protagonist was wearing bloody clothing.
  • Fixed bug that would cause students to forget what they were doing if they were distracted by the player aiming a camera at them while they were taking a garbage bag to the incinerator.
  • Fixed bug that would cause characters to slide across the ground without a walk animation if they were distracted by the player while returning a dropped object to its proper location.
  • Fixed bug that caused a random number of dumbells to disappear from existence after being placed inside of a bucket and used to crush a student’s head from the rooftop.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the game to incorrectly remember the player’s chosen school uniform when using the “Reset Week” feature on the Calendar screen.
  • Fixed bug that would cause a student to sunbathe in the incorrect location if they were fed by a Cooking Club member while in the middle of sunbathing.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the game to count a body part hidden inside of a bookbag as an unconcealed body part when attempting to attend class.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the student council to perpetually ignore giggles if they shoved the player away while investigating a giggle.
  • Fixing bug that would cause students to spawn wearing the wrong shoes or turn white while changing shoes if the player reloaded a save.
  • Fixed bug that would cause two photographs of Ritsuko to appear during her memorial if the player saved and loaded after killing her.
  • Fixed bug that would cause the game to forget whether or not a weapon should be splattered with blood upon reloading a save.
  • Fixed bug that would cause Ryoba’s gym uniform to turn pure white if she changed into the uniform after reloading a save.
  • Fixed some errors with the 1980s Mode female delinquent hair models.
  • Fixed typo on the ventilation system screen.
Successful Chat Interaction Test Stream! (A)
Good news!

Less than 4 hours after I announced that I was having trouble getting the “Chat Interaction” feature to work, the problems were solved!

In order to truly determine whether or not the feature was fully functional and ready for official release – or if there were still hidden problems waiting to be discovered – I decided to stream Yandere Simulator on YouTube and invite fans to type commands in chat to help me test the feature!

Hundreds of people showed up to help! It was a very successful test; every aspect of the Chat Interaction feature was confirmed to be functioning. A couple of bugs were identified, but that’s exactly what we wanted; to learn if there were any hidden problems that still needed to be fixed. (And afterwards, I talked with the chat in “Vtuber Form” for three hours!)

(video)

So far, there are two problems I need to fix before this feature is ready for official release:
  1. The chat-reading plugin doesn’t understand how to interpret emojis, so if anyone sends an emoji in the chat, the plugin freezes up until the emoji is pushed out of the message queue by new messages. Whoops! We can fix that.
  2. The plugin crashes if you activate it, restart the school scene, and then activate it again. Oops! We’ll get to the bottom of this problem.
There are also a handful of other minor problems that should be fixed as well (it’s hard to click the text field where you enter the URL, and accessories are not deactivating when the chat picks the player’s accessory) but they’re relatively trivial matters that will be quick and easy to address.

I think that this feature has a lot of potential, and I’m interested in hearing creative suggestions for ways that a chatroom of people could interact with Yandere Simulator. I’ve created a Reddit thread where you can post suggestions for new commands to add to the Chat Interaction feature:

What commands would you like to see added to the Chat Interaction feature? (A)

Please join the thread and share your ideas!

Thanks to everyone who visited the live stream and helped me test this feature! I really appreciated your assistance a lot!
Video of the stream is too big to be archived here, but here's the video of the status report in the first post:

There is some entitlement in those patch notes.
"Several male hair models have been replaced. If you don’t like them, you are welcome to model your own versions and show me screenshots. If I like your models better than the ones in the game, I’ll consider replacing the current models with your models."

This basically boils down to "send me better work you did for no pay and I'll think about giving you validation for it

Livestream interactions - For the game that got hard banned off twitch. I know there's other streaming platforms, but why would you sink effort into this?

Furthermore, it completely breaks every single one of your gameplay loops. Why bother worrying about reputation when chat can just fix or fuck you over at any moment? Why bother worrying about money when chat can spew it out? Why bother worrying about stealth when Chat can just spawn a bunch of murderbois out the gate. This is Goat Simulator style lolsorandom design, and won't create an enjoyable experience.

This reeks of a volunteer pulling together code to try and impress yandev and it just getting full blasted as his brand new feature instead. What a waste.

This is the most desperate cry for relevancy I've ever seen--implementing the most pointless (and as of now broken) mechanic on the off chance that someone out there first of all wants to stream the game, and second of all has a large enough audience for there to be an active chat. I can't see this being used by anyone besides a select few people, maybe at most five.

I love how I fell out of the loop on yandev for over a year, and come back to it still be the same notes occurring in his story. Some things never change.

what is his fixation on streaming? i mean, i seen people streaming breath of wild and have the chat spawn things like getting thunderstruck and that kind of thing... but for a game that is spected to be metodical or slow paced it just feels dumb, the dumbest idea he ever had... apart from the 80s mode. imagine working on something that no one asked for, that serves no purpose, and still make it seem like its the biggest breakthrought, sorry for the sperg.

This looks dumb and was a waste of time.
How is this useful in any way to have chat constantly spamming, causing the streamer's computer to freeze when changing the hair color of a student.

He's probably under the assumption that YanSim is actually Twitch friendly and it was just them being prejudiced against his indie project or whatever so he's doing the chat integration for his eventual triumphant return to Twitch.

Remember this marvelous fighting minigame?
Back in 2016 he had an idea to add this trash into the game and even back in those days when he was yet to crash and burn his nuthuggers hated it and were against it. And then he added it anyway.

what is his fixation on streaming?
Alex is not afraid to never finish YS development as much as he is afraid that his game is going to hit rock bottom in terms of relevancy.

Alex has a weird relationship with the wider games industry, where he seems to be trying to pick and chose things that make other games successful with the assumption that it will make his game just as successful as well. Brawling mechanics, 'Modding Support', 'Community Platform', 'Procedural Gameplay', and now 'Streamer Friendly. All chasing after popular trends from the years as games like Arkham and Yakuza come in and out of Vogue with their regular releases of actually mostly finished games. These franchises have had multiple mainline releases over the lifespan of yansims development, and every time he suddenly gets a bit interested in something from them.

In a sane game, making design decisions that support streaming content creators and make it a better game for them to play for their audience and while being conductive to their audience is good - Streamers are free marketing for anyone who's not already running a $20M marketing blitz. For the lost revenue of a few dozen copies, you get tens of thousands of eyes on your title, and if the streamers actually like the game, they'll keep playing it after the sponsored show, and then that's even better for you. Chat integration in this style is the most smoothbrained approach, but it can work for certain kinds of games.

I don't know what game specifically triggered this refocus, but I can imagine a lot of the rational is that he needs to get yansim to look good instead of shit, and is hoping that people seeing the game played instead of looking into the game somehow does that. The fundamental failure of this would be the sheer toxic waters associated to the title making most major streamers unwilling to touch it with a ten foot pole. Smaller creators aren't bad for the game, but they're also not gonna change any wider opinions.

I don't know what game specifically triggered this refocus
what is his fixation on streaming?
He had the idea since 2018, according to this post in the old subreddit, citing Clustertruck as one inspiration. Though, I believe it was a post that a fan sent in 2020 that made him refocus since he replied to it with hope to make it a reality.
I read the subreddit post and he only wanted to add chat interactivity feature because he thinks it will appeal to the higher-ups at Twitch.

Here's a quote from that post:
Currently, the big decision makers at Twitch think that Yandere Sim is a perverted hentai sex game or something stupid like that. I'd like to get the higher-ups at Twitch to take a second look at Yandere Sim, and I think the only way to achieve this would be to incorporate chat interactivity, because games with chat interactivity always grab the attention of Twitch's upper management.

To this day, Alex truly believes YanSim was banned just because it's perverted and not because one of the core features in the game is indiscriminately killing high school students. Killing everyone at the school gets you a secret ending in story mode and you need to kill five rivals in 1980s mode to unlock the true ending. You can also kill the entire school population for fun in the ABC challenge. And there's also SNAP mode, where Ayano or Ryoba go on killing rampages. You can play the game as a pacifist but Alex's focus on YanSim has been on the killing and torture shit.

And on top of that, Twitch just got a lot of heat from the US government and the media because a furfag livestreamed himself shooting elderly people at a grocery store. No amount of chat interactivity or stream-friendly features is bringing YanSim back in the Current Year. :story:

Not to mention, the higher ups at Twitch genuinely don't give a shit about letting yansim back on. How many viewers are they losing to streamers desperate to play the game shuffling over to other platforms? The leadership time to even bring up whether it should be released is worth orders of magnitude more in pure dollar value than any revenue they'd get from it actually being streamed on the platform.

This is actually what he was pushing during his second attempt to get this trash unbanned from Twitch. "There are other games like GTAV that have torture in them and Danganronpa where you kill teenagers, but they aren't banned! It's because those games are popular and banning them will cut Twitch's revenue, but YS is popular now, so can you unban it, please?" Nevermind the fact, that A - in GTA this is just one scene and you don't torture underage person, B - killing and torture are not the focus of those games. And in 2022 one top Twitch thot generates more revenue than all potential YS streams combined, so good luck with using this "argument" again, Alex.

In sure other streaming sites would let him play his game. Or is high school murder/torture banned on everything mainstream?
Either A: Alex doesn't care because he still thinks the biggest names on Twitch would play his shitty game if it wasn't banned.
Or B: Alex is afraid he'll get bullied off those alternative platforms for being a sped. [Which probably would happen.]
