He didn't have a career yet when this all started back in 1992. It was always just for fun until Don decided he wasn't going to do it anymore unless he could make money off of it. Despite making thousands of $$$ every single Kimmel episode, Don always complains about how broke he is. JKL produces over 200 eps per year, so he's making well in excess of $400k, yet he lives paycheck to paycheck and in near-poverty conditions. He rents an apt, leases his car, and his only assets are invested in CDs, T-shirts and baseball caps. Don's apartment is even more of a disaster zone than Perry's.
