I won't argue against Roman Catholicism or the concept of an "orthodox" Catholic for the moment, since it's not thread related. For the purposes of this thread, though, it should be pointed out that Mathoma is not a good-faith actor and neither is CT or really anyone in that circle barring maybe some exceptions. Anyone who's had an argument with Mathoma knows what I'm talking about. Whenever they're losing an argument, the accuse the other side of being mean, piety-signal, and then astroturf a fake moral victory. They'll change their arguments and contradict themselves mid-conversation if necessary in order to protect the institution of the papacy, because they certainly won't defend any actual specific point of doctrine. Watch them argue with an Orthodox guy about the essence/energies distinction and you'll see them take five different positions in the same conversation.

It makes complete sense that they'd share audiences with Nick.

Honestly, learning a genuine trade is more productive than debating 1000 year old theological polemics/apologetics and more likely to build character as well in addition to being good grounds for evangelization.

Now, Orthodoxy seems to be taking that spot as the "traditional" and "based" religion. That does bring in a lot of genuine converts, but there's also a downside. That said, the online Orthosphere is rife with the same types as the trad caths. Young, disaffected guys who convert because Orthodoxy is “based” and then become insufferable woman-hating faggots. Most of them tend toward the Russian tradition, as it is (at least in America) the most traditional, with the strictest rules. In the past week, I have seen way too many of them take Nick’s side, which is worrying.

The reality is that if any of these guys, whether Catholic or Orthodox, expressed to their priests the type of garbage they spew online, they would likely be corrected very quickly. There is a reason many priests warn converts about “online Orthodoxy.”

To be honest, I think you are giving these spergs too much credit. I’m sure some of them did their reading, but I’d be willing to bet most of them just started falling in line with ideas and aesthetics the SJWs hate because they are hated by SJWs.
