All research is insanely specialized these days, and scholars rarely talk to each other. Like for a liberal arts example, there's historians who spend their entire career specializing about one area of the Roman Empire like Gaul or North Africa and they rarely "talk to" historians who specialize on, say, the Franks or the Caliphate, let alone talk to archaeologists, anthropologists, and especially not anyone in the hard sciences like people specializing in irrigation, forestry, etc. Sure, they'll know the basics, but they spend all their time focused on their area of research and talking to other people in that field (and often teaching classes at a college). Most advancement in history these days is historians trying to piece together the archaeology, anthropology, and science behind what people dealt with in the past.

IIRC current research doesn't even have a good handle on why it happens, just that the presence of such tubes cause inflammation and kickstart the clotting process.
