By Tom's own admission, he was an emotionally unstable little shithead when he was a child, acting out and generally raising Hell. It's possible his acting out was an early sign of developing schizotypal tendencies, maybe he was just developmentally delayed in that regard. Whatever the cause, his father attempted to reign in Tom's behavior with certain excessive patriarchal measures; Tom has not, to my knowledge, recounted receiving corporal punishment as a young child but it wouldn't surprise me. This produced an opposition complex within Tom, causing him to act out more. Lots of children grow up like this; most grow out of it as they mature and enter the world. However Tom was likely coddled by his mother, setting up the other side of the coin known as Tom: his narcissism. This is echoed today in his bizarre black and white thinking when it comes to the gender binary, as in, the Male is evil while the Female is good.

As Tom grew into adolescence, he never learned the emotional and cognitive self-regulation that all healthy adults develop. His emotional outbursts continued but grew more violent as he entered puberty and gained size and muscle. His father was likely forced to resort to ever more confrontational methods to keep Tom from hurting his sibling or parents. But Tom was too narcissistic to recognize the danger he posed in his outbursts. It just further cemented his ideas of a backwards, patriarchal figure depriving him of the things he wanted. Eventually Tom set out into the world with a chip on his shoulder and believing the Universe owed him something. Likely at this time his schizo tendencies truly manifested; when combined with his narcissism and victim mentality, Tom became able to justify any hedonic impulse he had, never once exercising self-restraint or self-reflection.

TL;DR: He's a selfish manchild whose mental illness gives him egotistical justification to act like a fucker.

Every one of his stories seem contradictory. In his version of the Sabrina story she was already in bed with some lady who he had been sleeping with at the time and he just slid on in there, but then other times he'll suggest he's a virgin. One time he has a history of hippie shit and knows all these people, and then other times he has no friends at all, all based upon whether he's here trying to act hard or on Facebook fishing for sympathy. One time he's native, then there's a video where he calls himself white. One time he came from nothing, the next he came from a well off and well educated family.

I had already known Tom's life was a depressing waste, but wow.

It’s probably dementia and years of smoking weed, doing acid, peyote and whatever else he got his grimy little goblin hands on.

Chances are he always has been a headcase, such people are drawn to the alternative, hippy, rock and roll influenced subcultures.

Take the Hells Angels for instance, not that I am being disrespectful or rude if there are any members lurking, that group has always attracted misfits and renegades. Many of their membership are known to be thrill seekers and dangerous.
It’s an environment or group they tend to find kindred spirits in, not necessarily criminals or the like, just people who don’t always find mainstream society to their liking.

Tommie of course has never been tough or dangerous enough in the right way, so he latched onto the hippy thing as devoted hippies do tend to be tolerant of other people who don’t fit in elsewhere.

The problem for hippies though is that they don’t usually resort to violence so can’t police the people who seek to exploit them or drive out toxic people.

Hobo/misfit traveller communities are similar, but people in those groups usually are capable and quite experienced in violence, so they are better equipped to deal with the Dangerous members of their world.

Tommie gravitated to hippies, even though the hobo world of degenerates and free living would have suited him better.

In any case though, Tommie is not crazy and tough enough to be an outlaw, but too stupid and drug addled to hack it in the mainstream.

He exists in an odd fringe on the edge of hippy-dom but too spineless to train hop with his real people.
