Shares of Netflix cratered more than 23% on Tuesday after the company reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers during the first quarter. It’s the first time the streamer has reported a subscriber loss in more than a decade.

The company also said it expects the losses to continue, forecasting a global paid subscriber loss of 2 million for the second quarter.

Here are the key numbers:
  • EPS: $3.53 vs $2.89, according to a Refinitiv survey of analysts.
  • Revenue: $7.78 billion vs $7.93 billion, according to a Refinitiv survey of analysts.
  • Global paid net subscriber additions: A loss of 200,000 compared with 2.73 million adds expected, according to StreetAccount estimates.
Netflix previously told shareholders it expected to add 2.5 million net subscribers during the first quarter. Analysts had predicted that number would be closer to 2.7 million. During the same period a year ago, Netflix added 3.98 million paid users.

The company said that the suspension of its service in Russia and the winding-down of all Russian paid memberships resulted in a loss of 700,000 subscribers. Excluding that impact, the company said it would have seen 500,000 net additions during the most recent quarter.

Additionally, Netflix blamed growing competition from traditional entertainment companies that have launched streaming services, as well as password sharing for recent stagnant growth in paid subscriptions.

“Our revenue growth has slowed considerably ... Streaming is winning over linear, as we predicted, and Netflix titles are very popular globally,” the company wrote in a letter to shareholders Tuesday. “However, our relatively high household penetration — when including the large number of households sharing accounts — combined with competition, is creating revenue growth headwinds.”

The company estimates that in addition to its 222 million paying households, that the service is being shared with more than 100 million additional households through account sharing.

Netflix has increased its content spend, particularly on originals, amid intense competition in the streaming space. To pay for it, it’s hiked prices of its service. While the company is exploring other options for growth, like adding video games, analysts and investors are wondering what else Netflix can do to bolster revenue.

Netflix really expects people to pay $20 a month for Cobra Kai, Stranger Things and the rare DTV/Foreign action flick HBO or Prime didn't snap up first?

They're in for a world of hurt.

HBO is the one streamer actually killing it. Especially since they're about to merge with Discovery Plus.

Prime, if nothing else, comes with Amazon Prime shipping. Reacher and The Boys have been great. Wheel of Time and Rings of Power are gonna suck more painfully than a $5 hooker.

The rest? Get good, or see you on the high seas.

do they have anything worthwhile? im just waiting for a service where i can watch start gate and A-team and home improvement and mash,. i fukcing wanna watch Mash again or atleast hogans heroes!

I've caught Netflix editing M*A*S*H. Very subtle stuff, but they still edit it.

I've seen certain episodes enough times to know when there's lines or scenes cut or trimmed.

Netflix was only got their subscriber base big as it did was from 2007-around 2017 they where the only game in town (sans Hulu) as a result they had everything under the sun on there after the big IPs like nickelodeon Disney , ect.. left to their own services it became why am I on here again??

they should have bought the rights to mash when it was a $ or so to buy them. now they are fucked, why des nobody understand that the people watching reruns are the biggest demographic by far and we do not cqare about friends or any of that new stuff....

I think the reason why they lost subscribers is because they din have enough originals starring women of color and queers.

Seems like the cut-off for decent media is 2012-2015 depending who you're asking, and a lot of people [myself included] are fucking tired of movies and shows we like playing musical streaming services every year or so. Oh it was on Netflix, now it's on Hulu, now it's only Amazon Prime exclusive, now it's back on Netflix [but only for people in Canada and nobody else] so...

Honestly, fuck it. I'll just watch those free over the air channels and watch shit from the 60s and 70s. I wasn't alive for the original run so most of it is still fresh to me and I have either boxsets or torrented folders for everything else I like. HBO is just about the only one doing it right, though not quite as much of a powerhouse as they once were and I'm still fucking angry with them about Deadwood.

1. Rehaul the ui, remove the clumsy season tree
2. Brink back the rating system. Who cares if amy schumers show is thrown somewhere to back shelf
3. Drop the "netflix originals" branding. Start a new category "netflex pro" or whatever and just carry the top unwoke cream in it. Not even stranger things
4. Fire the current creative heads who made the current batch of crop
5. Have regular polls on which cancelled show to resurrect and give closing arcs to the already sunken cash
6. Suck my dick
7. Acquire a plex like product to help people pirate non-netflix shows easily but require the most expensive netflix account. Block piracy of netflix shows though. What's Disney gonna do? Sue? Prepare the program as home media management software
8. Release the fucking shows weekly and have on site discussion forums to create an ecosystem
9. Have 2-3 non scrubbable live tv like stream for bars playing absolutely random /tv/ tier obscure+popular but sfw stuff AND HAVE FUCKING ADS IN IT LIKE REGULAR COMMERCIALS. who's gonna outrage over that?
10. Wanna stay in news? Just propose the rumors you are considering to hire Alex Jones Show or Donald Trump for a special. Cancel the plan that never existed. Make account on gab, have an ama on 4chan. Think wild

You know why (((your))) company lost on subscribers? Because you forced the ones who were already paying for your services to change their passwords, due to account sharing. I don't watch Netflix enough to justify spending $20 every fucking month, there isn't a lot Netflix offers in the first place. That's why my mother in-law was more than fine letting her son and I have access to her account, and why most families/in-laws share accounts in the first place.

I don't care if it's against (((your))) ToS, I really don't. It's someone's money they're spending at the end of the day, and whoever spent the money on the subscription service gets to share their account however they fucking like.
Heh smarty, just get one account and share it across the world. Right?
It was completely cucked in 2019. Log on as a Canadian, fucking literally none of what I wanted to watch was available. Proxies dont really work because they'll ask for your cc, and it'll flag your region that way. I think I tried 3 different streaming services that night trying to watch a movie they had, just not in my region.

I've been streaming illegally or torrenting ever since.

Not to mention we're back at cable but dumber now, everyone has their own service.
I don't get why they cooperate so hard with the licensors who take money, just to annoy the users who give money

Nothing in place. Even better, two major shrines have announced that they will be doing their festivals this year, kung flu be damned. It's looking good.
Let me travel back to Osaka goddamn.

Also fuck you Netflix for encroaching an entire generation of spastic subscription services. Pirates ahoy!

Not surprised they're hemorrhaging subscribers. They've been cutting out anything decent for years now, slowly whittling down their worthwhile content and replacing it with shit they own and don't have to pay royalties and rights for. And it's inconsistent as shit. One show will be good, another will be such hot fucking garbage that you wonder who the fuck approved it. And anything they DO have that's good risks being cancelled, so there's really no reason to get invested.
