It's because they're so apolitical that people are free to discuss anything and everything, and that controversial opinions can be stated with little repercussions. It is also why the people who participated in the thread were ahead of the curve in disseminating information and speculating on abrupt changes in advice (eg: the CDC warning against taking baby aspirin to prevent blood clots or reduce the risk of a heart attack, even though ibuprofen has had decades worth of research backing it up), to advocating for alternative treatments such as HCQ or Ivermectin.
