I'm reading through Jonathan Haidt's "The Righteous Mind," which was written some ways ago yet remains poignant now more than ever. The extreme discomfort that very comfortable people feel towards ever being wrong is ludicrously exploitable. Better yet, throw in topics for which there can never be a "correct" moral code or government policy (abortion), and you have a basket for continual disruption and partisanship. Provide an avenue by which people can ensure they never escape the comforting world of like/dislike, and you've found quite the achilles' heel for democracy.

I've read that book but I come at it from a different angle. In my mind it's more about ingroup social cohesion than anything. You could potentially make the argument that the values you hold in the highest regard were the reason you found yourself in your peer group, but, eh...I think it's more circumstance than anything.
