Most of them were smart about it, either treating it like a hobby which made them a little money or a serious occupation. Digi made it a career while behaving like a (super-productive) hobbyist.
It's interesting that for a long time Japan largely snubbed its Western fanbase of its major cultural exports, anime and manga, as they had such a large indigenous customer base (that, and Japan is still the world's third largest economy). But now that (especially) Korea and (to a much less extent; their music and cinema is largely derivative) China are exporting to the West their cultures and taking them seriously as customers, Japan is making up for lost time by reaching out to the likes of the Trash Taste podcast.
Does Digi even have a college degree? In one of the episodes they talk about their college experiences and it turns out that Gigguk and Connor both had engineering degrees, and that Gigguk in fact had a Masters. These aren’t guys that chose YouTube as a career because they had no real prospects in life, they’re hobbyists who got so successful that full-time content creation became a viable career path.
No. I'm pretty sure he went to community college for a bit, but I don't think it lasted long (he didn't even want to finish high school). He started doing YouTube full time basically the moment he realized he had established an audience.
Acquiring those kinds of connects can be invaluable and also really hard. Even with said connections, being an anituber is a akin navigating through a mine field of potential copyright strikes, demonetization and account strikes. There are still plenty of older orthodox companies such as Toei (Dragon Ball, One Piece, etc) and by extension their daughter/sis companies. Good example is TotalyNotMark who received 150+ copyright claims over the course of one night. The truth behind it was that Toei asked YT to take those 150 down, to which YT requisted evidence of copyright infringement. Because Toei was even too lazy to format a list of timestamps referencing said material, they went for option B: manually striking every video - again with no evidence. Once YT found out Mark's account was restored but he lot a lot of momentum.
Couldn't have used a better analogy myself. Does Digi's main channel still have those two copyright strikes with a potential third being able to kill it completely? I haven't heard anything about that for years now. To use another analogy, that third potential copyright strike would, in theory, be the Chekov's Gun in this grand tale of Digibro.
To be perfectly fair, I don't think ANY youtuber would upload ANY video when they already have two strikes. As my last post about TotalyNotMark hinted at; most people will deal with the shit on the background before uploading any new video.
When vtubers first got popular in the west in 2020 I fell for the hype and watched them for a while until I noticed how repetitive it all was, now seeing them everywhere is as annoying as bronies used to be back in 2012. But as a true kiwi I'm glad that vtubers exist, they provide more lolcow content than much larger fandoms. Some of this content was even covered on this thread, like May's cringy Hololive audition video, and hilariously it is a pretty unremarkable video compared to the stuff that literally happens every day. I wholeheartedly agree. Back when Kizuna Ai was the newest thing on the block I loved listening to her but it got repetitive as all hell. The entire "girlfriend experience" shit needs to stop. I feel like a lot of men would benefit from required military training nowadays. As much as I dislike seeing women (or men pretending to be female vtubers) making bank I can't blame them. It's all market traction. If there wasn't a demand there wouldn't be a supply.
Does this mean Riley won't delete comments anymore? Maybe Digi will get the full brunt of comments now. Him also noting doing stretch goals based on views makes me think he's getting back on track doing his usual content once again. I know he doesn't want to admit he fucked up, but I think he noticed. A little bit.
The timing of the Ygg brake up was really funny. Right after Digi's video talking about the importance of Riley. With this in mind, and the way he refers to Riley as his friend. I wouldn't go with the fight theory. Riley finally noticed that he was wasting his time and so it was time to leave. But decided to don't burn bridges with Digi to have a backup when his next project fails.
V-tubers are just let's play faggots with anime personas. I was never a fan of let's players because they never do anything besides 'le wacky voice screaming'. The only ones that are tolerable are speedrun commentaries which explain the game's mechanics, interesting details, and tutorials on doing glitches etc. Reaction channels and let's players are glorified NEETs at the end of the day and I'm suprised that ironic weebs worship them even though they're constantly insecure.
