There are plenty of highly mutagenic viruses that are absolutely lethal. Ebola for one, which was a huge bitch to eventually make a vaccine for. HIV is the obvious one as well, constantly eluding the combined medical resources of the world for 4 decades now.

Again, the very fact that viruses, which have literally existed for billions of years, are still perfectly capable of killing you proves that this “downward slope” of lethality may exist on very, very short timescales, but it is not an axiom of virology. Otherwise, why do viruses still kill us after so long?
Neither Ebola nor HIV have become more deadly though, which I think was potato’s original point: the unlikelihood of Wu-tyan to become deadly.

maybe that's because they can only be contracted through bodily fluids, rather than through droplets, which have a much higher reach (unless you wear a mask which helps contain the droplets). ebola is highly contagious, but you can only get it through bodily fluid transmission, which is a lot more up close and personal than someone merely having to breathe near you.

what i'm trying to say is that the way it transmits matters, and it's easier for a virus to transmit by air or little droplets than it is through bodily fluids. the more people who get the virus, the more potential it has to mutate.

Honestly, I fucking wish the Chicken Pox vaccine existed back when I was a kid and mandated.

I saw the shit my grandpa went through when Shingles reared it's ugly head and I'm not looking forward to getting that. Shingles ain't fatal but it sure as hell ain't a laugh and a half.

HIV is one of the fastest mutating viruses in the world though, despite the transmission method.

there is a shingles vaccine now, although i think they only let you get it at a certain age. or something. i dunno.

it's alright, i had chicken pox, too. the vaccine had just come out, and my parents were concerned about it because, you know, it was new, and they were concerned. (my parents recognized this as an error on their part later on)

Yep, from what I understand it's not really super effective but it's better than nothing and I'm sure as hell going to get it when I'm eligible.

If viruses get weaker over time, and they’ve existed for several orders of magnitude longer than humanity has, why are they still deadly?

Because the viruses we see today very likely pale in comparison to the ones that died out thousands of years ago. This is going by the very topic above, they get weaker over time through mutation and pressure.

With that said, we are on year 3 of the pandemic, is corona killing more now or was it killing more at the start?
