I just find it creepy because the only time I've ever heard someone be called hun or honey, it was from 80's diner waitresses you see in movies and in TV shows. Never heard a real person say it (or, seen a real person type it).

Well, it certainly is bitchy.
Try being from the mid-Atlantic and having both of your grandmas use it liberally, one of whom was a waitress for like 40 years. Most of the time is was a term of endearment, though my paternal grandma was able to just as easily use it to shut down bullshit real fast, God rest her soul. @Crickets can't get on her level.
The use of "hon" is kind of a "thing" in my city, really.

In Bawlmer, it is usually used as a sign of affection. My grandma could turn it into a barb because she was originally from New York and carried that attitude with her when she moved south. Nowadays you got a bunch of 20 and 30-somethings on the internet trying to sound like sassy old ladies by being all dismissive and patronizing, suffice to say they are doing it wrong.
My culture is being appropriated and I would like to file a formal complaint.
