From my own analysis, this isn't inaccurate. The informants behind the Frank Wu article and several Kiwis familiar with her have espoused the belief that the Wus (as in both her and Frank) were pushing the oppressed feminist narrative before it became popular to be trans with the Social Justice community. Only one small problem: Wu's pushed it so hard and has so many supporters in the TERF category that if she reveals it, she'll be torn to shreds

I keep such theorycraft off of lolcow wiki, but my belief as to why she does this is very simple:

I don't think she regrets the decision. But you're very close to the real reason, IMO.

Brianna Wu is a failure. She's failed everything she's ever done, and only is a success by the most broad and incoherent of metrics. She's repeatedly failed out of college, her business have all been disastrous failures, and it's only because of her insanely privileged upbringing and later, Frank, that she has anything to her name. She has never known a significant hardship beyond the most token and personal of them. Brianna Wu transitioning, however, had everything to do with her following her current career path.

Consider Brianna's history - with Socially Unconscious Productions/Election Eve, and remember how she used to brag about how awesome she was, as John Flynt, back in the day. John believed he was owed a readership by divine right, and similarly, believed he was inherently predestined towards success. Reality didn't meet him halfway, but he was sure enough about it coming right down the pipe that he'd outright lie to employers, outright lie to investors, and outright lie to himself about the success of SOCCON. John becoming Brianna was simply a way to advance that.

All of this explains why Brianna focuses so hard on the Feminism angle and claims to be legit even though it's fucking obvious she isn't because she's got gigantic Tyrannosaurus hands, towers over others, has visible scarring on her throat and legs, et al. Brianna Wu is pathologically unable to face reality. She can't, because that means admitting she's failed, and she thus far never has, beyond mere statements of fact. Brianna, like many narcissists, has never had to face that fact and has never learned humility (the lack of which, as any chronicleer of lolcows knows, is the hallmark of lolcowism). This, I feel, is the core of why she won't admit it: It would be the same, to her, as publically admitting that she fucked up and that Revolution 60 isn't coming to Steam after all.

The thing is, if she wasn't a terrible person, this could be a watershed moment. Something she could learn from. Something she could improve herself over. Unfortunately for her (and fortunately for her critics and lolcow chronicleers alike), Brianna Wu won't.

I know this is a little bit late, but after rummaging a little bit through the wiki - thanks for awesome work, by the way! - and reading up a bit more on Wu, a thought crossed my mind:

Assume Wu doesn't come out as transgender, because that would be like admitting failure BUT also assume she isn't happy with her 'Wuness'. Both are reasons why she desperately tries convince others of her narrative and why she wants to believe it herself.

Now, with this internal conflict in mind, I ponder what admitting her transgender status would mean to Wu herself: Her becoming female was probably the most important decision in her life and it is pretty much a one way street. Admitting that she is transgendered wouldn't just be 'another failure' to her, it wouldn't be like: "Hey Mommy, hey Daddy, I sunk another 300.000$ into the ocean. Can you send me another 300k so I can try book publishing how?". (*)

If Brianna really has gotten a SRS, this wouldn't just mean that Wu failed as the "feminist game designer" but as a human being all together.

Being Wu (awesome title for a book, btw.) is what she is now, I think there is nothing much left but this ill fitting flesh-mask she is wearing for a face. She is forty, she isn't a real woman, she has got a real degree, she hasn't have the drive to do anything but polish her image and play video games, she has a horrible character, she isn't a feminist, she isn't even fully female.

I think, if she comes out as trans and admits to herself that she is a fake, there isn't anything beneath that mask of hers worth living for. 'Being Brianna Wu' is all she has.
This is a realization that can kill people.

(*) Assuming that her parents didn't cut her off after her transition, which sounds likely if they were politically involved with the Bush campaign.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: Woman is repeatedly victimized, forced to fight her way through horrific events, is rarely portrayed as having agency. Big element of the plot is her sanity being questioned as her own obsession with being right drags her down (ring any bells, Bri?).

Fallout 4 (minus spoilers): Some bad shit happened to you. Go fuck up the people who did it and take back what's yours. Or fuck around building houses for 8 hours straight then drink yourself blind; we don't give a shit. You've got agency, do with it what you like.
