The more you go out of your way to avoid offending someone, the more sensitive they become. It reminds me of a bit from "Schindler's Ark." Amon Goth, a concentration camp commandant (Ralph Fiennes's character from the "Schindler's List" film), used his near-absolute power over the prisoners around him to kill or brutalize pretty much anyone who got on his nerves. Over time, exempted from normal annoyances, he became increasingly quick to anger and employ violence. At one point he shot a chef because the soup burned his mouth. I think the same principle is in effect here -- the more you're insulated from provocation, the more sensitive to provocation you become.
