I'll take a quick shot at this. You have two things going on with the pandemic--the disease and the reaction to the disease. Case counts are driving the reaction that is fueling all these second order effects like closures and restrictions and a generalized feeling of antipathy or even animosity among some people towards other people. So while this disease is very rapidly approaching its equilibrium with the collective immunological profile of humanity, focusing on cases is going to prolong the agony and ultimately accomplish little else. This thing is becoming akin to a common cold or flu and we don't have mass surveillance for those. I'd even speculate that if we treated the 1918 spanish flu pandemic the way we're treating covid, that it would never have ended. If you're constantly screening massive percentages of humanity for H1N1 influenza, you're going to see spikes happening indefinitely, if anyone who goes into hospital gets tested, and if every death within 30 or 60 days of a positive test gets counted as a flu death, and this information gets amplified by a fear mongering media, then the spanish flu would still be going. That's insane, imo.

Every public health campaign ever has used propaganda. That's what advertising is for. You know, like the posters on public transport asking you to cover your mouth when you cough. Or when they put a bit on the 6pm News bulletin about how you should get your yearly flu jab.

And coercion? Bribery? You're acting like there are schools/day cares which won't refuse your kid admission if they haven't received say the measles or chicken pox. Like there aren't governments which refuse to pay out child benefits if you don't get those same injections for infants.

And as for the censorship part, that's a load as well. As evidenced by the posts shown here from these pillocks' social media, they aren't being censored. They can by and large spout whatever they want, because they're chronically online and it's too much of a pain in the arse to reign them in. People spouting dangerous misinformation against vaccination and medical treatments have always been pariahs. Only now we live in this post-truth era, right wing opportunists propagate it, and idiots listen to them.

Ironically, it wasn’t even supposed to be, it was straight up a direct analogy for climate change deniers. The fact that you can apply so many other aspects of America to that movie is the truly depressing thing.

Edit: Actually, I just read that, while originally being written about climate change, it had chunks rewritten during the pandemic, so the COVID parallels probably weren't accidental.

If you're trying to make the argument that a significant number of those who die within a certain number of days of a positive Covid test aren't really dying as a result of Covid, you kinda have to explain why being vaccinated against Covid is so effective at preventing these deaths. Because the numbers show that those who are vaccinated are about 80% less likely to die after a positive test than those who are unvaccinated.

Both can be true. I'd be interested in seeing where that 80% number is from, because it conflicts with some other data. Looking at things like when Santa Clara county audited their death toll, they found that the number of covid deaths had been juiced by almost 30%.

So you have a situation where you still have a lot of death, but the reality doesn't match the hype and in a situation where the media is trying to make everything look as bad as possible, that kind of fudging makes a difference. More importantly, the situation now with omicron amplifies this disconnect between the reality of the situation and the fear and hype being generated because it is basically a cold that's infecting everyone with lightning speed and that reality of the disease is diverging further and further from the perception.

First one is clearly made by a 70 something boomer, only they still reference the Wizard of Oz in most of their political memes.

The second I think was made by an art cow that died not too long ago. He was really talented and he was anti vax waaaaaay before Covid-19 was a thing. That picture might also predate it. I can't remember his name because I can't find his thread here but I know it exists.

I don't think measles or chickenpox are very good comparisons. There was no chickenpox vaccine when I was young, generally speaking it would get intentionally spread when I was growing up... because it was almost always mild in children but was almost always much worse in adults. You didn't want to be the kid who reached puberty without that natural immunity. With measles, it's the opposite. Comparatively devastating to children, particularly those under five years old. Measles, Polio and Rubella (German Measles) are three of the major childhood scourges that were largely eradicated by vaccinations... and for good reason. But on it's absolute worst day, in the poorest country you can find on the planet, COVID-19 is a walk in the park for children compared to any of those diseases. Polio was permanently disabling / paralyzing for up to 20-25% of survivors. Measles regularly had a mortality rate 10-15x higher than COVID-19 as little as 80 years ago... and that was just everyday regular life year in and year out.

There just isn't any legit comparison to be made between injecting your children with vaccines for those diseases vs the COVID jab. First, the measles, polio and rubella vaccines have been around for decades and have been proven largely safe. Second, they protect against diseases that are particularly horrible for children. For the COVID-19 vaccine, neither of those reasons hold true. I got my two jabs last spring... not that I was particularly excited about it... but I'm older and don't particularly care about long term side effects... and seeing that I work in a "critical field" and normally roam around hospitals I figured the reward outweighed the risk. But it will be a cold day in hell before my kids take this rushed to market bullshit for something that offers them statistically zero real world benefit. They can jab themselves three times a day until they die after they turn 18... but not until then.

As far as the censorship part, of course it holds true. Nobody should be banned from social media. The entire goddamn point of the internet was for communication. The entire promise of the platform was that it was going to be decentralized... that powerful interests like governments or corporations or corporations paying off governments couldn't run the show... like they could in print or broadcast. Give me the grifters, give me the tin foil fucktards, give me the government agencies and the media conglomerates... I'll soak it all in and make up my own mind. But you can go fuck straight off if you think your moral high horse stands tall enough to "reign in" things you don't think I should be hearing. I'll take in all the information and do my own critical thinking, your laughable speech policing isn't required.

As far as I'm concerned, the vaccine is the greatest thing in the history of mankind, and antivaxxers deserve to either be forcibly vaccinated and boosted machine-gunned to death in gulags. I feel so bad for them how they'll never experience the feeling of ecstasy you get after getting vaccinated. I try and get at least a Pfizer and Moderna every month, and every single time I can just hear Dr. Fauci's sweet, sweet voice in my veins telling me "You did well, your empathy will save millions of grandmas." I can't wait until politicians stop dragging their feet and mandate at the very least monthly booster shots, we'd be saving so many lives and teaching millions of us vaxxers how great the vaccines are.

These QAnon MAGA Republican Nazi conspiratards don't know what they're missing. It's so sad they'd literally kill grandmothers and vulnerable people instead of getting some Pfizer in them. If they felt that same feeling I do when I get my biweekly vaccination, they'd change their tune fast. Thank god for Pfizer and Moderna and multinational pharmaceutical companies and the government employees who made all this possible like Anthony Fauci. They're saving the world.
