Smart resize is bullshit because it affects different pixels differenly based on what it perceives as content, unlike ‘interpolation’ which treats every pixel the same.

Regardless of the method; any form of interpolation or smart resize, or whatever method to "increase the fidelity" of an image you might use: It's still inserting data that wasnt there to begin with, based on what are effectively estimations. I'm sure we're in agreement that these images shouldn't be used in this case.
