I am actually kind of fascinated with how little trust you guys have in his defense when they have done a quite good job so far for all I can tell.

It's just so extraordinary in real life for the defendant to take the stand in a case like this, especially such a high-profile case. Relying on your own right not to testify and the fact that your silence can't be used against you is the norm. And this is a kid, not a smooth-talking college-educated adult. He could very easily tank his entire case, which is why most people don't choose to do this.
