This whole thing is awfully tragic. Kyle made a dumb decision choosing to arm himself and go out that night, most rational people would agree he should have been at home on PSN or whatever the fuck. However, a bunch of actual adults (some actual violent criminals/predators) came after him, a 17-year-old boy. You put any 17-year-old boy in that situation and they will be terrified for their lives, and they might shoot someone if they are armed. In that sense, I fail to see how this isn't a case of reasonable self-defense.
