I don't know how anyone could genuinely miss the 2000s. I remember it being an incredibly boring and demoralizing decade, marred by cynicism, elitism, and economic depression.

The neocons had full control of the US government, just about every leader in Europe was some flavor of polished, neoliberal centrist, and much of the clattering classes were busy beguiling themselves with the banalities of a post-Cold War intellectual malaise which allowed for little if any substantive debate or alternative viewpoint.

The 2010s was when things started getting interesting, since the internet was increasingly poking holes in the status quo of the prior two decades, and the powers that be could no longer continue to hubristically ignore public opinion (though they still tried). Remember how the cheerleaders for the "war on terror" enjoyed a largely unopposed voice in both the media and the government 15-20 years ago? Do you miss those days? Because I certainly don't.

Long story short, it was a much better time for geek and nerd culture, we were allowed to have our video games, our anime, our comic books, our books, our movies, our technology, our online communities without a massive agenda working tirelessly to take it all away from us.

Geeks were poised to take over the world and to save it, to drag all the idiots kicking and screaming into a smarter, better world, but the idiots figured out new ways to spread their idiocy and corrupt all of that, because the powers that be want everyone to be idiots, idiots are easier to control.

I get a sick feeling in my stomach when I think about what geek culture used to be and what the Reddit, Funko Pop corrupted version is now.

Basically things went sideways in the 2000s after 9/11, but there was potential to save things, there was still potential, there was still reason to be hopeful that maybe we could fix things, that's what been lost in the decade since and that's what I miss.
 
I don’t remember a lot of what any of you are talking about. I was born post 9/11 and lived in a post 9/11 world. I never got whatever golden age you all are talking about. But I grew up in a bit of a time warp. My mom, about 38 years old now, grew up not knowing what a cassette was or a radio, because she lived isolated on an island with a bunch of retired old folk. She didn’t find out till she was in highschool, where she splurged and indulged in 1990’s nerd culture and early 2000’s internet.

I grew up with no internet until I was like, 8 or so. But once she thought I was the right age, she exposed me to it and taught me about it. I grew up on old internet values with a mix of exposure to the internet you all seem to view as ruined or downgraded.

It still felt like a Wild West, to me at least. I could find crazy ass music, my favorite cartoons in a different language, a forum with a clover on it and a white T in a blue logo, all talking about things like Anime, and Human Rights, or just being fucking stupid. Nobody knew my age. People valued my stupid opinions as a fucking fetus, YouTube‘s original founders went to my middle school and we were taught about all the crazy ass things you could do, everything felt so alive and vibrant and nothing could quite make me happy more then posting on a dubs thread for funny numbers or see all the cool AU art for Dragon Ball Z on tumblr. Everything felt creative. Unchained. Wild, and wonderful. I could escape from the world that I had long grown tired of.

Then things changed. By the time I was 14, I couldn’t recognize either site. 4chan went from edgy anime losers with way too much free time to nazis and bbc posters so fucking miserable I’m suprised a rope didn’t manifest in front of them to end it already. Tumblr became barely shambling corpse, crippled by the lack of self confidence, and users who had viciously destroyed one another to be the most disabled, inversely making them the most powerful, and still the most miserable. Hatred reigned, and nothing more.

Where had all of the souls gone, who replaced my friends with monsters and bitter automatons? I found no solace in the places I loved, and suddenly, the option to experience a world beyond my poverty ridden shithole life was no longer available. Then I came to kiwifarms, and lurked for what is soon to be 5 whole years. I made an account last year, seeing as it was closed to a mix between the 2 before it all changed. It’s not a perfect replacement, but it’s at least some bastion of something, a fleeting memory on stale winds.

People say the world never changes, it just turns forever.

But I remember the day the world stopped turning.
November 18th, 2016.
The day the world, as I had loved, it died.

There were plenty of people who opposed the status quo back in the 2000s; the difference was that back then they were largely without a voice, since social media was very much in it's infancy, and just about everyone exclusively got their news from mainstream news outlets.

Anime and video games are still legal. You can still have all these things.
Spawn and The Punisher being less popular and relevant doesn't mean someone is trying to take them away from you. The Feds aren't comimg for your Elfen Lied DVDs.

I'm assuming by 1993 he means January as he very clearly was not present for the mario bros movie, my birth, or the 28 years of society that followed.

What I would highlight is that the 2000s had their own culture wars, and while they seem trivial now, I'd argue were a lot more important two decades ago.

The Iraq war, a new wave of "punk" music, emo kids cutting themselves, the war on drugs back when it was an actual thing you could get arrested for, the end of actual gangster culture and blood/crypt feuds, street racing culture, politically the last real vestigaes of power that the evangelicals had fading away (both with gay marriage and things like Terri Schiavo).

I think that the main difference now is that while there were divisive political camps back then, you could actually afford to be politically homeless and not care about politics, and that today people are more and more often forced into political ostracization for not touting a party line, even relative to communities they once felt comfortable within.

You also have the big issue that the internet, which was once a refuge from normal life, now is an extension of it.

Really, I miss being free from having to belong to a set political camp or people strawmanning my opinions constantly. Most people are not ready for political discussions, and its likely best that they not be bombarded 24/7 with conspiracy theories from CNN or Fox.

The thing people call "the culture war" is about the infiltration, co-opting, and destruction of culture by grifters and elites. Trends come and go but the 2010s culture wars are like the evangelicals draconian bullshit on crack, bath salts, and meth all at once to the point shit is still fucking happening.

But I actually find a lot of parallels with "emo culture", percieved backlash, concern from parents, and the social contaigen elements there to whats going on with troons and agps today.

The difference in that minor culture war is that it stayed somewhat minor, parents didn't give into children and agree to let them mutilate and kill themselves, and it faded away somewhat in the 2010s. I can remember moral outrage and concern; however, and even a few fox news segments on the disturbing new trend of kids cutting themselves and "what is this nation coming to".

Street racing and the culture that followed that had its own issues with petty criminality, and if you were in an area where this culture was more prominent, especially in areas with more Chicanos, it had its own cultural issues and nuances as well. Fascinating subculture, divisive in some aspects and had its own fair share of culture war news segments on how people needed to ban the sales of certain vehicle products, watch kids more, how we needed surveillance and more police men, etc.

Smaller culture war things that seem trivial now, may be much less encompassing than "is this the end of democracy" or "should your kid cut off their penis", but still impactful in their own right. I really miss the fact that while culture wars have been a thing for awhile, you didn't have to go out of your way to avoid them and if you had no horse in the race chances are you wouldn't be bothered.

Now, for culture war issues, it doesn't matter if you have no horse in the race. The other racers are demanding in a contest not to win, but to get you to suck their horse penis specifically. Shit sucks

Kids dressing in black and thinking they're deep and cool is nowhere near as intense as teachers telling kids they can be born with the wrong parts and if they like things not within their lane they should mutilate their genitals. There's a social contagion but it'sa very different kind.

Streetracing is just a fun thing people did/do for fun in some places Cops are shitters in that sense if the streetracers are on a barren ass road at 3 AM.

Just because someone didn't approve does not make it a "war"

Yes, this is why I just said minor culture war, to say the least without repeating.
 
One of the most annoying things about 2010s was probably the pre-dashcon tumblr era. Anglophilia, superwholock, tumblr sexy men, colbert report, endless gif reactions, soft grunge, peoples weird hate boner for Mitt Romney over really mild things, Maclemore NOH8 straight allies, thinking liking pizza is a quirky personality trait, list goes on. Plenty of things are way worse now, but this era was still awful

I did love pre-2010s internet though. I was on weeb sites like Gaia online and deviantart and watched edgy amvs. I also loved how lawless cons were around then (minus the wooden paddles) I've seen kids try to recreate that era with "animecore" and "webcore" but it's just sad.

You'd have a mix of the fucked up glass bodied people and the shitposters that just infuriated them with their image edits and "hate blogs" dedicated to posting horrible and funny shit they found online. I never made a Tumblr account but I used to lurk the various weirder ones of those after friends of mine that did have accounts but barely ever posted jack shit aside from like game screenshots or some shit would link me. The blogs would have those "affiliate blogs" things and you could just go down a rabbit hole of fucking weird content. All of these are 404 now I'm pretty sure because the people in charge either became pozzed with the politics brain rot disease or were banned forever by the moderators for "hateful content" or some dumb shit. It was just a fucking blog site and the social justice people were just an extremely vocal clique on it.

"animecore" and "weebcore" are shit ass terms just fucking say you like to wear anime merch you fucking jackasses. The wooden paddles were funny joke novelty gifts but I heard some stories about how some deranged fuckers would beat people with them trying to get strangers to kiss each other which is why they ended up banned eventally. Now though when you see any video talking about them the things are treated like some kind of incredibly horrifying sexual molestation item or some shit like that it's dumb. About as dumb as the comments calling old games or newgrounds mario parodies "too scary!" I wouldn't doubt scalpers somewhere are trying to make bank off "vintage anime con paddles" these days .
 
Hell yeah, even if I don't remember a lot of it. It's better than the shithole that was the mid-to-late 2010's and the current 2020's.

I got the best weird shit from Tumbr before it got nuked. I still can't find a good source of weird shit after that and I could use some suggestions if it doesn't derail the thread.
