N64 did that too. I vaguely remember seeing Donkey Kong 64 bundled with a transparent green N64.

Nintendo of America also had this giveaway where different colored N64s came with different games.

(I think the purple one came with StarCraft 64.)

That's the basic requirements of running Steam so any game on it needs to to run at least on a platform equal to or better than the platform selling it.

I'm not arguing against bloated software but look at those specs. DirectX 7 is from 1999 and predates shaders, a 1ghz processor could be had in 2000(either by paying a lot of money or by paying much less and doing a FSB bump). The recommended requirements are: you need a computer 20 years old or less. It probably uses the CD-ROM version which explains the size, iirc there was a pre-rendered intro and stuff that would stream from disc and never had to be installed.

The sysreq is arbitrary and for games like that I think they just wing it, they set it at whatever they want or feel comfortable with.

Pentium 166, 32MB RAM, DX6 and running Windows 7 - no that doesn't work at all. But those specs are the specs written on the box (with the exception of storage, the box says a minimum of 50MB uncompressed and that turned into a huge disaster for Activision).

It's sad seeing old informative websites made by one person completely dead, only inaccessible through wayback these days. So many sites even those made in the 2000s are gone now, even if the people who hosted them aren't dead. People just lost the want to do it. Social media is no replacement for that. I don't get it.

Going back to the 3ds it had it's own personal feel that actually made it seem different than any mobile phone out there or other existing consoles, now they just went full lazy and slapped a nu-ui into it and it's been the same since launch. Can you even install themes? At least the 3ds added that. Nintendo found their moneymaker and decided it never needed any improvement ever.

And judging by the sales of aftermarket mods for the switch, per se, people really want this kind of design back in general. Making the switch look like it's a giant down syndrome gameboy was and might still be all the rage. Random Chinese companies are making bank while Nintendo misses out. As for the playstation and xbox they at least make decent limited editions sometimes.

The minimal Switch UI is the best design decision Nintendo made in the past decade at least. I don't want the whole thing bogged down with animation and music and Miiverse and whatever else, I just want to get in and play a game. The aesthetic might be a bit "nu" but it works and stays out of your way.

While the WII U definitely experienced slowdown from this philosophy, I don't know if you ever used a 3ds but it's UI was actually snappy in comparison and the hardware refresh in 2015 made it practically a moot point. Load times were never too much of an issue other than downloads on that thing. I get your point on distractions, but it's a game system and should moderately seem like it instead of just looking like any generic smart tv's interface.

I thought you were talking about the iPhone and I don't know if they removed it or not, but album art carousel was awesome. There's a reason people point to 2007 as a change, the first iPhone was an actual chick magnet and women leaned in and asked if they could take a look at the thing. Let me tell you something, that never happened with gameboys or nokias.

That's because of the market they are going for they know the boomer's who smoke are unlikely to quit, The Millennials who are entering middle age and are about to start a massive health kick so wont want a tobacco flavoured replacement, and they are trying to get the Zoomer and younger demographics hooked onto something tobacco has been a very profitable crop for 400 years and the companies involved in it are spinning off subsidiaries to target those demographics.

I tried vapeing with one of the Big Box mods a few years ago and I just couldn't get on with it for the 6 months that I tried, it was fine in a pinch but when I was stressed or having a drink it just wasn't the same - but I am willing to give it a go but I still don't like the idea of having to charge the thing.

Maybe, but I suspect the problem is that most manufacturers these days will not want to show off their quality of workmanship (or lack thereof....)

OEM stuff inside is horrible these days, as is the documentation for the equipment.

During lockdown the seal on my washing machine failed, no repairman able to come to the house but after some googling I found the part number for a repleacement seal called the repair an service number they wont sell a part to a end user for a machine that's still under warranty (it wasn't just a cop out phrase) I found a place selling them that had them in stock and was able to post it out to me but it took me a day or so to find a service manual for a similar model to work out how I was supposed to take the thing apart and replace the seal (not obvious and involves rebolting the drum).

The difficulty comes from putting it together in ways where you don't put screws directly into the acrylic glas and it's a bit tricky but possible. You can also have custom metal pieces made like this. Everyone is on about 3D printing at home these days but these services are pretty cool too. Some of them also do wood.

You can get special inserts for Screws into acrylic, some of them are blind and you have to glue them in but there are some threaded ones

Seems like even re-releases of primitive programs use an obscene amount of system resources.

Yea some programs that are released have oddly large requirements for what they do, that can be beyond just badly recoded or additional functions added.

Just the same, Apple has practically removed all of the fancy visuals they launched their Iphone line with. I'd actually put them as one of the major faults for the whole nonsensical move towards increasingly shittier and simpler modernistic design philosophy. Google moved towards their material paper or whatever it's called theme for Android soon after Apple made IOS 7(?) with it's entirely flat and gradientless setup. And it's just gotten worse since that.

Even though I could upload all those songs into a larger storage unit, and it may even be more convenient, there is just something so satisfying hearing the clicks and whirs of a CD, inserting, ejecting, or shifting between tracks.

I am aware some still do have them, but most I've had access to use did not. They opt for other technologies. My relatives either didn't care for a CD player or did have it available. As for the few times I've needed to rent cars, the dealers do not have CD players in most models. Why? No clue.
