You know, if Phil had come out and responded as soon as he found out, he may have had a chance to avert this. We didn't believe it immediately and if he had said that it was bullshit, we may have believed him, for a time. It would've been him reacting quick enough and would've painted booof as a shit stirrer.

Instead people continued to look, using his silence as an admission that there was something there he didn't want anyone to know. The moment people started tracking his transaction history, he lost control and his chance to nip it in the bud. He could've bought time, after the escort saga there is a scepticism to any radical claims made, and placed doubt on it even without anyone hearing it.
