The thing about that logic is, it works the other way. If a gay man needs a character to be gay to identify with it, then that must mean a straight man needs the character to be straight to identify with it as well. No reason to be shocked when straight men complain about a character they have invested in being rewritten to be gay if that's how you think about it.

Little off-topic and probably irrelevant, but I've been filling my older sister in on Weeb Wars as she's a Normie who isn't into Anime much (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is the only one I got her into) for the past three months all the way back from the beginning, and I told her how KickVic defended Ron "I'll chop your fucking dogs up" Soye's past as an abuser, wherein she was completely disgusted by their heinous actions...She herself is a domestic violence survivor.
