I used to be a very heavy drinker, and I would put away a half gallon of tequila every day, i don't think a fifth is gonna hurt anyone too badly. I did it for 6-7 years, half gallon days were me at my worst. I quit drinking that heavily a decade ago, and rarely drink more than a couple glasses a month now. The body is resilient and fucking tough. He could stop at any point over the next 5-10 years and get back to reasonable health if he wanted too. Dragging around that extra weight is doing major damage to his joints/knees though.
