Personally I tink they can be fun (at least to look at) in a weird way when done right. First you have to be really creative with the level design...

At their best, they give the game engine a workout and display genuine creativity. Really autistic creativity, but it's a form of showing off...

They're fun in the same way that watching a Rube-Goldberg device is. An interesting curiousity and little more. The things take a LOT to make...
