I haven’t seen it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a thing in San Fran or Portland.

I’ve never heard of them being used I think the whole idea comes from some opinions article.

Closest I've seen was in a one shot online game where one player was spamming x while the GM was trying to describe the scene

The only time I've ever seen one used is at a table of pasty neckbeards playing Pathfinder Society trying to persuade some m'ladies to join them...
