They watched the Japanese version of this on an early Wheel of the Worst which may have been the inspiration.

It's just a bit about how a dystopian future run by a faceless megacorp (ala Disney) would reduce the masses to being numbers instead of people...

Its not really that new of an idea. I first saw it in The Terminator, but I bet its older.
