GURPS is a great system but it leans towards the crunchy side. Why not take a look into Savage Worlds.

Bad news: GURPS can be insanely complex. Also, it requires you to have umpteen-hundred D6 handy. GURPS Vehicles takes the cake on this. Trust me...
